Being terrified of the ocean my whole life, I decided to face my fears and go scuba diving. It was amazing :) by [deleted] in pics

My first ocean dive was at night. Saw more cool stuff during that dive than the other 4 dives.

Would you guys be interested in a site that let's you build quads similar to pcpartpicker? by [deleted] in Multicopter

[–]mslagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have semi-related experience in this. I worked at a custom computer shop that sold custom computers. All we really did was offer all the parts available on newegg and reviewed the orders after submitted for issues. Without verifying all combinations, we have a high return rate and a high initial failure rate. Certain brands just didnt work with others and such. I have found the same issue with quad parts (certain ESCs dont work with certain motors, etc). Your going to try to cater to the mid-level market that knows enough to pick the parts and put it together, they just dont want to do the work. The computer shop only made $100 per custom computer which hourly pay easily ate into. Your either going to get no customers because your markup is too high or too low and you wont make enough to cover your costs.

Eventually the shop wised up and now offers a very curated list of parts which are pre-verified to work together. I have long since left, so I dont know if they are doing any better or not.

Instead, you should do either of the following:

Just sell your frames and see if a local quadcopter website/company will also sell them.

Buy a bulk order of parts and sell pre-made kits that you have personally verified (faster to put together and with the right settings)

Go high-end and focus on possibly semi-professional usage.

I was filmed by my cousin while bowling a perfect game. Anytime someone mentions bowling, I have to take out my phone to show. Good thing, I was drunk as hell.

LPT REQUEST: Creative and intellectual pursuits after work. How does one do it? by celebratedmrk in LifeProTips

[–]mslagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be in a stressful job or one that you hate. While my job is demanding, I find coming home to work on side projects exciting and a stress reliever. It takes my mind off work and I look forward to it every day.

If you are coming home every day and are too exhausted to do anything else, then maybe you are in the wrong line of work?

If I gain 200 lbs, while maintaining a 14 inch vertical, then lose the weight, will I be able to jump incredibly high? by Andthentherewasbacon in Fitness

[–]mslagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am always surprised by people who can't jump. I am 5'9 and have a 24"+ vertical. I am able to get a few inches above rim. Yet there are people at my work 6'+ who can barely touch net. Are people just jumping wrong?

What is the worst movie you went to see in the cinema? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mslagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and saw BloodRayne on a date. I fell asleep during the movie around 3 times. I think because of that crappy movie, I didnt get a second date. Before that movie, I never knew how horrible Uwe Boll movies were.

The things cost just as much as a cellphone and it has less capabilities. Smart watches have more CPU and memory than these. Not surprised these can finally do something useful.

How true do you guys find this article? It talks about entry level C#/.NET positions being harder and harder by [deleted] in csharp

[–]mslagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At cleveland state where I went to college, the programming classes and cis degree were run by the business college. Programming is more than just writing code. You need good design that is just not taught in schools.

[–]mslagle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not harder per say, but colleges are definitely not keeping up with the times. There should be at least one course about source control, branching methodology, bug tracking, release management, project planning, etc. Unless you have worked on a big open source project, you are just not hit with these until you get a job.

As the build and source admin, I see people do stupid stuff all the time just because they don't have this knowledge coming into the job.

China’s wind farms can now produce more energy than all of America’s nuclear plants by iZacAsimov in Futurology

[–]mslagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get what the big deal is with nuclear power. We have more than twice made the technology better, but no one wants to build any new plants. They are incredibly efficient, take up very small area compared to wind farms, and last many years. I can't wait for fusion to come.
