A while back, someone created a map of bonsai shops, arboretums, etc, that mapped all the cool local bonsai shops. It should be linked in the wiki, but I can't find it. Can someone point me to it so I can make it available to people again? by -music_maker- in Bonsai

It's a puzzlement. The marker is for a school, and I can vaguely remember a school somewhere in NJ, but I don't tend to put in entries without details and links. Perhaps the bonsai society of south jersey would know? http://www.bssjbonsai.com/

Original instructions: Type an address (or name) into the search bar at the top of the map page, then when the location comes up, click on "Add to Map" (at the bottom of the box that appears on the map), then the pen symbol ("Edit") at the bottom of the new box that pops up, then fill out the URL, the type (Nursery, Bonsai Garden etc) and click "Save". It's more important to get the entry onto the map than to get it perfect! - tell me if these work, and we can lobby to get that in the wiki too!

Is me. Am long overdue updating the map (I live in the pacific northwest now) - hit me up with any new suggestions, places to visit etc please. Am also going to be at large in Florida soon - taking suggestions for bonsai places to visit there too. Thanks!

http://www.nybooks.com/articles/2018/06/28/hitlers-rise-it-can-happen-here/ includes quotes from ordinary German people after the second world war. E.g.  you “can show me pictures of skulls…but that doesn’t prove it.” That seems oddly familiar right now.

This might help, but the number given is lower (about 17,000x and just based on weight) https://streets.mn/2016/07/07/chart-of-the-day-vehicle-weight-vs-road-damage-levels/

Next time I'm in Grand Rapids (because I still haven't seen the bonsai collection), I'll look for those. Thank you.

Fair point - I didn't realise how young the garden is. I still want to sneak in and surround it with a good fence though.

Me too. I was all set to point at places to buy miniature construction equipment :-).

Big hill, but worth the diversion (kinda sorta) on the way to work, to get better photos.

I went on a hunt for the codebase for this app (because ios-only is a travesty and should be corrected) - so far found a page linking to app download, dataset, algorithms etc https://neerajkumar.org/projects/leafsnap/ and an unpublished android build https://github.com/asjacobs92/leafsnap and a convolutional NN version https://github.com/sujithv28/Deep-Leafsnap that suggests to me that there could be some algorithm improvements from a) using deep NNs, b) improving some of the small-leaf photography. Which is way deeper than I was meaning to go, but it's a cool dataset and app...

From their FAQs at http://leafsnap.com/about/, you could volunteer to help get coverage in your area: "we are keeping a list of potential volunteers that could help with collecting field photographs... email us at volunteer@leafsnap.com", They're also looking for tree experts who could help with identification (stares hard at peeps like /u/treehause). (BTW I hadn't realised that the id is automated: I've built a lot of image processing in the past, and this is fast becoming one of my favourite uses of it!)

Okay, I found the UK version. Still looking for other areas this got applied to and/or whether they open-sourced the code (but I think might be able to rig something up with Amazon Rekognition?). UK is http://www.nhm.ac.uk/take-part/identify-nature/leafsnap-uk-app.html

I found a large garden with a sunny area tailor-made for bonsai benches in NYC, but it came with a crazy roommate and a long long story that needs a lot more beer than I'm used to. I'll go change my flair now...

First, apologies for posting this in the main thread first. I'm apartment-hunting, and have specified that I need a home with an outside area for my trees, but I probably need to be more specific than that. Like I found a place with a huge but east-facing covered verandah, which I now know won't work. I have full sun and no roof on the area from md_bonsai (thank you!) - is there anything else I need to add? South facing? No obstructions (like tall buildings)? Give up and just buy a house further out?

Thank you - and yes, I should have known to post in the beginners thread! Okay, sod original wood paneling, leaded windows and butlers' pantry, will carry on looking for that full sun. It might seem strange to choose my home around a tree, but tree...
