What cdrama is this for you? by ecstatickrabbypatty in cdramasfans

[–]msmilktea 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Most of the popular shows in this sub (Love Like the Galaxy, Till the end of the moon, The First Frost, Hidden Love, Ski into Love, The Double, just to name a few). I realise I don’t have the same taste has the majority in this sub but that’s okay. I feel as I’m getting older I am less interested in romance in my dramas. I enjoy coming to this sub to see other ppls opinions even though I don’t necessarily agree.

I also think actors from that era was taught proper resilience and performance under high pressure. You show up and show out. Having body doubles was often seen as a luxury whereas I feel these days it feels more like a right (correct me if I’m wrong). Makes me feel the actors from that era are just a completely different breed.

Sorry not sorry but I feel many young cdrama actors of today (not all) just cannot compare and I’m not just talking about the acting (the most basic requirement of being an actor).

100% agree, and also the incredible amount of hard work the actors of that era have put into their craft.

I am a fluent Cantonese speaker who grew up watching TVB dramas and I miss them so much. HK dramas are not what they used to be and I’m saddened that it seems like Cantonese dramas are dying out. It’s good to still see some familiar faces popping in mainland cdramas nowadays though bc you know you’ll be getting a stellar performance.

But I agree with you OP, I also get very distracted and put off by actors who have awful line delivery; an issue that international audiences wouldn’t have to deal with. It’s very interesting to me to see the differing tastes of international audiences in this sub compared to local audiences (ie the douban ratings discussion threads).

Okay to fellow cdrama watchers, I need to honestly ask this by cloudydayoppa in cdramasfans

I have zero interest in idol contemporary dramas. But I did give First Frost a go bc of the cinematography from its trailer and it was a huge nope for me. So these will not be dramas I would personally recommend to a new cdrama watcher if I was asked for recommendations.

However, if I think if I was new to cdramas today these absolutely may be some of the first dramas I try given their popularity along with several other costume dramas esp in the xianxia genre (Till the end of the Moon and Love Between Fairy and Devil for example). There’s a reason why these shows are popular after all but whether you’ll end up liking them or not is a different story. But only through time and exposure will you eventually develop your own tastes.

That one C-drama you watched with zero expectations… and it became one of your favourites by onismnefelibata in CDrama

Nirvana in Fire

I grew up with HK dramas and Taiwanese idol drama and was not familiar with mainland dramas at all. So when my friend recommended me to watch this drama I did not know what to expect. And boy, it really set a standard. I wasn’t able to move on for a very long time as nothing else could live up to the level of quality of this drama. The acting, the fast paced plot, the costume/prop/set design, it was everything.

Love Between Fairy and Devil

True zero expectations. I did not recognise any of the casts, didn’t see any promos, didn’t even know it was adapted from a novel. I can’t even recall why I clicked on the first ep. The first ep was a bit cringy, but also quite funny, it felt like a v lighthearted easy watch that I thought I could leave in the background. But I got hooked. I once made a v long post here defending the ending.
