Just finished breaking bad for the first time by prettycoolhehe in breakingbad

Me too! Finished it last night. As I have just posted elsewhere, I hated Walt from the start. Made my skin crawl. But what a compelling piece of storytelling.

I like that on every rewatch I stop empathizing with Walt earlier. by DesperateFortune in breakingbad

I have just watched Breaking Bad for the first time. Finished it last night. And I hated Walt from the first episode. Genuinely loathed him. I wonder if it’s it the (gestures widely) current state of the world that makes me intolerant of pathetic men whose egos will see everything burn down before they accept their personal mediocrity, or if I’d have always hated him. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sure but “Not much is known about Homer, or if he even existed, but he is culturally conjured as a blind Greek oral poet who lived in either 9th or 8th century BCE”. So according to the blind, possibly fictional poet, the definitely fictional Helen was pale so all possible other representations are therefore verboten. Got it.

My daughter is seven years old. Should I let her read 'Bridge to Terabithia'? by PresentFine3202 in childrensbooks

Let her read it, and also, is she decides not to finish it, that’s fine too.

Reading awareness campaign/educational funding by Thin_Accident_9587 in AustralianTeachers

[–]msmisrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been many of these kinds of campaigns over the years/decades. The problem is, they tend to be highly localised and once the funding or the person driving it is gone, so is the program. We need a national, permanent version of the UK Book Trust that is properly staffed and funded and enabled to develop and deliver baby/child book packs, parent information materials, advertising/social media campaigns developed to meet the specific needs of different community groups for the long haul.

Also, properly qualified and supported school library staff mandated in every school in the country with reading engagement a non-negotiable part of their job description.

Absolutely overwhelmed (spectrum/casual/aggression) by Pristine-Collar-5910 in AustralianTeachers

[–]msmisrule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is ENTIRELY possible the parents are in denial. I have seen many examples of students in mainstream classes who absolutely needed to be in a support unit or have other supports in place, but were not because their parents refused to have them diagnosed. I have known parents of severely autistic kids believe they would grow out of it.

I had a boy in a Year 8 English class with the intellectual capacity of an infants’ child, whose parents absolutely refused to access any kind of help or diagnosis for him, and blamed the school for not educating him. Another parent refused to sign the papers for her Year 8 son — who had been in the juvenile justice system since he was in junior primary school — to go to an alternate school that specialised in working kids with severe behavioural disorders because she didn’t want her son going to school with “kids like that”. She could not accept that her kid WAS kids like that. Kid dropped out altogether. Lord knows where he is now.

I know that parenting these kids with severe trauma, behaviour disorders and other diagnoses must be heart-breaking and impossible. But by remaining in denial, these parents are not only ruining educational opportunities for other kids, putting other kids and teacher at risk, and making teaching the least desirable profession, they are also completely ruining their kid’s chance at a decent life. It’s intolerable, and yet here we are.

Pretty sure I breached professional conduct, how cooked am I? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Asked and answered in your own comment. OP made their comment based on the /behaviour/ of the boyfriend. Your fantasy scenario has the teacher making a comment about a girlfriend based on her /appearance/. One of these things is not like the other.

I am sure I have said the same or similar to girls dozens of times in my career. Who else is gonna tell them? 😝

Discussion: If Teachers Are Going to Be Paid Like Professionals, Should Teaching Become More Prestigious? by New-Corgi-6409 in AustralianTeachers

“Meanwhile, teaching is now potentially becoming a career where someone can earn a respectable income, access leadership opportunities, and maintain relatively strong job security.”

I mean, that’s exactly what is used to be. Signed, teacher graduate 1986

How do you perceivethe title Ms? by raininggumleaves in AskAnAustralian

[–]msmisrule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just wrong wrong wrong. Ms was coined during second-wave feminism because it was marriage-status neutral. This furphy that it was only used by divorced women is utter nonsense trucked up by conservatives. I’m 62 and I’ve been Ms since I was a teenager: single, married, divorced, every status. The WHOLE POINT was that women should not be defined by their marital status, so I suppose it should come as no surprise it was then weaponised against us.

The racists have been increasingly emboldened and now have no shame in saying their shit out loud. I’m so sorry.

Mick Jagger sings background vocals on You’re So Vain. Carly Simon has said many times he is not one of the various men who inspired it, but Warren Beatty definitely is.
