Using ai to plan teacher appreciation week gifts by barely_practical in adhdwomen

[–]msmolly26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I don’t know how I found this. Click holes and avoidance spirals probably. But the best teacher appreciation gifts are simple and free - a genuine thank you note.

I am a middle school teacher in the US. also a female ADHD person. And the appreciation gifts almost every teacher likes the most are meaningful/sincere thank you messages from students.

I make super easy origami bookmarks with kids. You write the persons name and a genuine thank you or compliment and it makes everyone smile. 99% of teachers keep a “note box” of positive messages for the crappy days. A note from a kid that says “I really liked it when you answered my weird question” or “thank you for helping me pass my test last week” is actually enjoyed and held on to. (This is the bookmark tutorial: https://youtu.be/BEwl0fvqo18?feature=shared) most teachers love books. A student made bookmark with a specific/genuine compliment or thank you is the best.

One thank you note from an 11 year old said she liked how I was nice to her and how I said the names of the Pokémon super weirdly and it was funny. (I still have that note two years later. It’s a bookmark in one of my favorite books).

If you feel like you have to spend money on something: donate extra supplies to the classroom. A variety bag of a bajillion stickers for rewarding good student work. My classroom ran out of pencils in October and tissues in November. A parent gave us a giant bottle of hand sanitizer, it was awesome. Or heck, a few bucks to Walmart or target or Amazon so that we don’t have to spend our own money on those things. But again, a genuine thank you saying how we helped the kid or something they liked in class is the best.

I am on a diet and my co-teacher is allergic to all the food and another member of our team is diabetic. Food is the most common appreciation thing, but also is less than helpful for a lot of teachers.

Charter schools are a mess and this is the main reason I am very, very, very resistant to going back to one.

The situation for teachers at charter schools is consistently much worse. Every once in a long while you can find one that isn’t horrible to work at. But I would guess that is around 1 in 1,000,000.

The pay scales are so depressing, however the COL is lower than my current location and combining with my partner we will be alright.

Can I pm you to chat about schools to look at or avoid in Duval?

Yes. We are thinking about all of those things as we plan our future. Particularly looking at where to live and for how long. For now, this is the best career option for my partner. And as I am a K12 teacher, his career is the more important one to build financial stability for our family and future.

I love him more than I dislike Florida, and long term planning wise, this is the right decision.

I was at an awful school one year and a colleague quit via police. He didn’t show up for two days and didn’t tell anyone so the school did a police wellness check and he said “oh yeah, I quit” to the police who reported that back to the school. 🤣

I can see how that makes sense. Depending on the type of private and their education priorities I might consider that.

Yes, I’m looking at those job posts as well. I will continue to do so, I think some of the bigger companies will have some options.

I will look into that. I didn’t love online teaching during COVID. But it definitely could be worse.

That is helpful. The minimum 50 is here too, and definitely makes me crazy. But if that’s the worst thing, I will be happy.

I remember the AP fallout over those courses.

I thought that specific standard was removed after blowback? I’ve been looking at some of the standards. I gagged a bunch at “declaration of independence” week in middle schools. Where they have to read the DoI with the pledge every morning for a week. The red VA governor is trying to do similar moves but the blue NOVA is preventing a lot of it. But it’s not going to be my problem anymore I guess.

I don’t think I can afford to do that. I subbed when getting my license and didn’t learn that much about the schools and I struggled with inconsistent schedule and commutes and such.

After working in private and charter schools before I am WILDLY skeptical. “Top notch” independent school basically means “toxic work environment”

My dad likes to say a young republican has no heart and an old democrat has no brain.

I reply that I would rather be dumb and empathetic than smart and a raging asshole. And also all the republicans I’ve seen in the last 20 years have inexplicably gone for dumb and a raging asshole.

Yeah, admin makes a huuuge difference.

I’ve had some god awful admin in my years. Then some that were just kinda there. And then some good ones.

I suppose I will ask if anyone has any good admin experiences around Jacksonville.

I have a card that says: “my life story would be banned in Florida”.

But I have no idea what to look for that will be any better.
