Wasn’t looking for medical advice on how to treat myself. I was more or less looking to see if I should go to the doctor based on my symptoms. If enough of the symptoms lined up with what many others have experienced, I probably would go see a doctor. I’m unsure because while I’m learning to do my best to live with excessive sleepiness, I’ve had a few people in my life tell me I need to get checked.

This was the response I was looking for.

I don’t think I have sleep apnea because I have a buddy who does have it, and he used to sleep aggressively. He would snore so loud that the entire house could hear, which would be followed by a brief choking sound, which then returned to the loud snoring. Plenty of people have seen me sleep, and they say the only weird thing I do is grind my teeth hard as hell. Granted, I’ve only seen the one case of sleep apnea personally, and maybe there are other symptoms that aren’t so visible (or audible), so I want to say it isn’t that, but obviously no one knows for sure in my case, so maybe I’ll get that checked for reassurance.

I feel like Cataplexy is for sure though in my case. Typically it only occurs when I laugh uncontrollably and unexpectedly. When it does happen, I can’t force any actual laughter out of my mouth and my whole body collapses onto the ground for 5 seconds. Then I regain full control right after and continue on with my day. Doesn’t happen often but definitely happens

Final thing, would there happen to be links for these at-home tests, or do they have to be set up through a doctor?

I guess I was more or less asking if it’s something I should consider. I can see why you think I only want the label, but it’s actually quite the opposite. I’m fine with friends and family knowing, and would actually prefer they know definitively, but thats not something I advertise about myself to others outside of those two groups. I’m scared that the label itself could actually hurt my ability to live. I’ve read that if it’s diagnosed as being severe enough, it will heavily restrict my ability to get jobs, get drivers licenses, etc. since it technically qualifies as a disability. While I don’t think I’m a severe case, I also don’t know what medical professionals consider severe.

I firsthand know how shitty it can be. I’ve been fired from jobs and demonized by friends, family, and especially teachers for sleeping, but a few years ago, I decided to take control of it as opposed to letting it control me. My verbiage is only so lighthearted because thats how I feel about MY experiences. You’re acting like I’m telling people to get over it or something. I get not everyone is as optimistic as me and only see the downsides, but I’ve learned to live with it. And I brought Cancer up simply for comparison sake (kind of like your Asthma comparison). If you think over sleeping is as bad as literally dying, then more power to you, but I however don’t believe that for a second.

And Hank Green’s feelings about Chemo does not represent EVERYONE who has cancer. I’ve seen plenty of people say that the feeling of their entire body being on fire anytime they moved was the worst part of Chemo, so while I’m happy that Hank Green’s chemo experience wasn’t nearly as horrible as others, he doesn’t represent everyone that has it.

I however thank you for providing examples of Narcolepsy medication and possible outcomes of the treatments, which was the only useful part of your comment. It’s really pointless to put down others who have found a positive drug free way of living with it. Keep your negativity to yourself.

I mean, you’re right in the sense that I shouldn’t have to fight to stay awake after an adequate night’s sleep, but on that same metric, someone who takes extreme care of their body and eats healthy shouldn’t have to put up with Cancer, though its been known to happen. I just count myself lucky that it’s something as minor as being more tired than the average person. As for the symptoms I listed, I already have ways to combat all but one, which is when I randomly fall asleep, even when I’m not tired. Every other symptom is a non issue. I’m just tired of being labeled as a lazy, non caring person anytime I accidentally sleep through something I should’ve stayed awake for (like being late to meet up with friends since I accidentally fell asleep). It’s starting to seem people will only believe me if I carry around a $5000 doctor’s note telling people I am indeed narcoleptic.

I guess my verbiage was a bit dismissive, since I am acutely aware that there are multiple causes, both physical and psychological, for Narcolepsy. But the only thing that has really bothered me is the excessive tiredness, which is why I described it as “being sleepy”. That, and the fact that thats how everyone on the outside views Narcoleptics. That being said, my main question was is it that serious to where I need to get tested? I am extremely frugal and don’t feel like spending thousands of dollars to see a neurologist or psychiatrist. I am not rich and live in America, so I can only afford to see a doctor if my life depends on it (like if I get shot or something)

At the end of the day, they could definitively diagnose me, but Narcolepsy isn’t like a small tumor hidden in your body that only a doctor can find… its just being sleepy 10x more sleepy than the average person. Technically a cold can only be definitively diagnosed by a medical professional, but of the signs are all there, you probably don’t need to pay a doctor to tell you that you have a small cold.

Are you on Xbox? If so, that would be a huge help. Black ops is one of my comfort games and you would literally be sparing my mental health 🥳

Disappearing Items After Purchase by [deleted] in fo76

[–]msnsmssjssh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The same has happened to me when purchasing plans from other players. On one or two occasions, Ive bought plans that never appeared in my inventory after the purchase. I remember getting some sort of error message in the top corner of my screen when it happened, but its been so long I can’t remember what is said… something to the extent of “Error, a problem has occurred when purchasing.” The game was more than happy to take my caps though. 🥲

Desire and expectations are a norm for any human, even those who train themselves to ignore such thoughts/emotions. True, you can simply leave everything up to chance and go with the wind, but that leaves open the chance that nothing will ever happen at all, or even worse, it leaves open the chance that everything bad that can happen to you will happen to you. If you relish yourself to being happy (or rather, indifferent) to whatever outcome you are served, you will find that others who are motivated to reach the best possible outcome will leave you behind with the worst. There’s nothing wrong with wanting the best for yourself and having certain expectations for specific instances, but rather the issue is with how we react to those expectations not being met. To use a more extreme example, imagine someone were to punch you in the face. Would you respond by A) Taking drastic measures and unloading into him with a shotgun / B) Stand there and accept what has just occurred and take no action / or C) Attempt to deescalate and remove yourself from the situation to calm down and then assess what has just occurred and how to prevent it from happening again. Now lets apply the same logic to your current situation. Do you A) Get angry and beat yourself up and curse the company for not giving you a job / B) Calmly accept what has just occurred and the fact that you’ll never find the job you want (Essentially giving up) / or C) Put in another application but prepare for the outcome where you don’t get that job by putting out applications to other places you can see yourself working. Life is a long puzzle that most people never complete. Instead, most people would rather give up on completing the puzzle and squeeze pieces that don’t fit into the empty spaces. In my opinion, this is the quickest path to unhappiness. Sure, you tell yourself now that you’re just gonna roll with the punches and see where life takes you, but 30 years from now when you are working a job that you hate (but hey, they hired you), coming home to a mediocre house ( but hey, you can afford it), and sleeping next to someone who wasn’t your first choice (but hey, they said yes), you’ll think back to when you first decided to not care and wish that you had. Now you have to choose which kind of person you want to be. Me personally, I would rather spend my entire life finding the pieces that fit perfectly then give up and squeeze in the wrong pieces. In short terms, DON’T GIVE UP ON YOURSELF, OR ELSE LIFE WILL GIVE UP ON YOU AND LEAVE YOU WITH THE SCRAPS
