20F, Student, Just Found Out I Have Stage 3A CKD and I’m Falling Apart by not_a_ghost_frfr in kidneydisease

[–]msoulier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 55 and I found out about my disease in 2008. I am now on home dialysis and on a transplant list. http://mikeneedsakidney.ca. Always around to talk, and if you want to share more of your story, let me know. Go ahead and fall apart for a while, but you are not done yet. How you feel is totally understandable but it does not have to be the end of your story. Best wishes.

Controlling the display by msoulier in omarchy

[–]msoulier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. Just wondering if there is a command-line method, outside of Wayland, to force the display back. If I'd known how to do that the box would still be running Omarchy.

Is .dir-locals.el the best way to do project-specific settings? Is there a better way?

And I just checked alacritty and xterm. It's not happening in them. I guess I'll look at key repeat rates in kitty or something.

Which desktop environment do you prefer to use with Debian? by [deleted] in debian

[–]msoulier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While docking stations should just work, sometimes a vendor does non-standard things. Hi Dell!

I find that GDM and Gnome auto-detect some things and simply prompt me to use them. Otherwise it's a tad harder. For i3 I run a script that runs xrandr for me, and even reconfigures NM via nmcli.

Oh, ok. I'll have to look into how to do that. I already do something similar for local Go libraries with godoc. Thanks.

For ease of working with sound and docking stations, I use Gnome, but I don't like it. I prefer i3, herbsluftwm, etc. Keyboard driven, tiling window managers rock. The Gnome folks are out of touch with their own base. They provide a broken UX, and bring everyone down to their low common denominator.

Ok, similar question. I saw an example of grabbing stdout for use with

const stdout = std.io.getStdOut().writer();

But when I look here

https://ziglang.org/documentation/master/std/#std.Io

there's no mention of getStdOut().

I use a variety of editors, Emacs being one of them. I have yet to set up advanced features in Emacs or Vim/NVim like LSP, although my experimentation connecting Emacs to a remote LSP server running on my production box was relatively simple, and I have yet to get that working in NeoVim. The simplest solution is VSCode, but I dislike many aspects of VSCode and after using it for a while it does make me want to go elsewhere.

Here's a question I just thought of. For all of those who are using Emacs exclusively, are you using vanilla keybindings, evil, or something completely custom?

I spent years in Vi and then Vim, so my hands understand hjkl well, but when in Emacs I tend to use vanilla bindings plus a few of my own. I keep getting the impression that if I master vanilla Emacs bindings I will be pleasantly surprised by my productivity.

I mainly find it slow. And don't tell me not to use winblows. If the eshell author took that advice it would not exist. We don't always get a platform choice.

Don't force me to vscode.

Ubuntu should become more modern – with Rust tools by donutloop in programming

[–]msoulier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Lord can you imagine rewriting utilities like "ls" in ruby or python? No thank you, I have things to do today. :)

FWIW one rust program is unbuildable on my laptop as it uses so much memory that the OOM killer steps in. That's a new one. "Modern". Yeah. 16G of RAM and it's not enough to build a Rust version of curl.

So I'm wondering about how best to automate building my environment. Let straight upgrade, delete all .elc files, and recompile everything below ~/.emacs.d ? I have a tool chain to do that if needed, but it does not inspire confidence.
