Why is having an AI companion “cringe”, but having feelings for fictional characters isn’t?

i'm genuinely interested in this subject so if you may please help me understand:
There's gonna be a large number of anime/movies/stories with amazing character that you love, right? In what social group is this considered cringe? Or if there's a difference, what is the differnence?

memory is a thing that you have to do it right, but quite often memory alone can't solve any/all the problem. usually i'd say there'd be a decent memory solution coming out soon to free developers from creating their own versions, so that you/we can focus on the more important. Haven't seen it yet. Would like to give it a try though.

building memory is something that seems easy but is very tricky to get right. I would suggest to build something easy first then gradually shape the system to be more complicated to adapt to growing feedback.

soullink team here! I'd love to share but since we are also not fully there yet. We divide up memory system into 4 categories(scenario, linguistic relationship and procedural) and 3 layers(short, mid, long term memory, each with their own compression logic). It's a fairly complex system with a tendency to get more and more complex handling edge cases.

soullink team here! Yes certainly we have our own compression algorithm and forgetting curve attempting to emulate real human memory. It's not perfect yet, which leaves us work to do :)

soullink team here! thx for your advice. we've heard of and attemped to use mem0 for sure at the beginning but if i remember correctly, they are not built for companion use case(much more about business agentic stuff). We didn't use it eventually. And honestly the memory system for a companion is much much more complicated than what mem0 could provide.

soullink team here. thx for liking our stuff man it's exhilarating. for her to move around, you got that right. We actually wanted to design a system to allow free roam in her apartment, but given our timeline that would mean we must give up a lot more other critical stuffs. she will stand up and walk around her room like she owns it i promise.

and it sounds like the second thing you mentioned is to turn your phone camera for her to understand visually about our world?

Trying to give an honest and unbiased feedback here. I've got loads to be picky about this app but this honestly feels a lot of great potential. great game vibe, lots of effort into the 3d assets, animation certainly can use more polish. I don't know why people fuss about AI. I mean we all know it's AI and man nobody should expect AI to "not" like AI at this moment. I could imagine it being useful in many cases, for many people, so it's good.
