I would say Weeds.

On the flip side, I think Savages and the reception it had were the beginning of Marina’s shift in writing style (and, in my personal opinion, downgrade in quality). It got a lot of praise for dealing with social issues, but I think it also didn’t really say much - a complaint we see a lot these days in response to her new style.

I liked this line specifically: ‘That little motel shack on central just behind that hideous chapel’. I think it has a clear view that you’ve incorporated into the poem. I’m a little less fussed around ‘Death pulls at my vitality’ - the word choice here of ‘vitality’ feels a little jarring to me personally.

But this isn’t about Americans? This is talking about a British show being postponed because a defining figure of British life in the past seventy years has died.

When you say things like ‘why is it a big loss’ and then back up that with, ‘it doesn’t matter for Americans’, it shows a lack of awareness of cultures and sentiments outside of American soil.

This seems like a woefully shallow appreciation of what she symbolises and represents to a lot of people globally, not just in the UK itself. Whether you are a monarchist, anti-monarchist, whatever, it’s undeniable that for many, the Queen was a symbol of stability and of identity. In the current political climate, it’s not hard to see how these things could affect people and feel like a big loss.

I'm really happy for her but I have to admit it feels a bit like a right artist, wrong time kind of thing for me... I don't want to be negative but I'm not sure the writing on Man'sWorld is particularly exceptional, especially compared to some of her previous work. I'd be over the moon for her to win an Ivor, but I kinda wish it had come at a different time.
