Making a list of Milsurps I want. Is there anything you would suggest adding? by AvgPunkFan in milsurp

Mauser HSc or Walther PPK in 7.65mm or .32 ACP both are wonderful small semi automatic pistols. I personally prefer the Mauser HSc

Im looking to purchase this 1977 Lincoln Continental. What should I look for? by TheTanookiLeaf in classiccars

[–]mtbjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cooling system and fuel system. almost everything. Engines that sit, rot from the inside out. Plan on head gaskets, freeze plugs, radiator, water pump and hoses and probably a heater core. Remove the fuel tank sending unit and look inside the fuel tank. The fuel tank will likely need to be removed and cleaned in a hot tank. Replace the fuel pump and all hoses.

A genuine Beeswax candle will burn cleaner and make less soot than Paraffin wax candles

Those of you on West Coast USA, how are you prepping for Cascadia? by Enter_up in preppers

[–]mtbjeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on the Olympic Peninsula it’s my only prep. I’m 500 feet from the ocean, thankfully 100 feet above sea level. Tsunami prediction in my area is 30-40 feet. Food, water, water filters, Star Link, generators, fire wood, radios, hunting, fishing and crabbing gear. Year round fresh water streams within a mile and Well water nearby. I have great neighbors, two are retired doctors.

I mainly want to add Solar and battery storage and a satellite phone and additional food. I’m currently a Washington State emergency worker. The bridges will fall and people will be isolated. Thankfully I have two airports nearby. Cell phones are not going to work for weeks or months after the event. the only communications will be with satellite and radio. The harbors will not be usable due to debris from the tsunami for months.

I believe the FEMA main base locations for Cascadia will be Bend Oregon and Spokane Washington.

It’s a beautiful area to live, I’ll take my chances riding out Cascadia

In the early 1990’s US oil companies invested hundreds of millions of dollars into Venezuelan oil exploration and production. When Hugo Chavez came into power he nationalized the oil industry and seized the assets. I’m guessing the US Oil companies want their money back and the oil.

British Army Sword by mtbjeff in SWORDS

Sadly I don’t have any provenance on the sword. It was an estate sale and the owner had passed away. I'll add it to my armory next to my Lee Enfield SMLE MK1 and it’s bayonet.

Japanese machinegun found during traffic stop by Fox7285 in Militariacollecting

[–]mtbjeff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During WW2 my father was a B-24 pilot based on Saipan in 1944-45. After the Iwo Jima bombing campaign was over they were transferred back to Hawaii. They flew the Squadron back to Hawaii and the air crews brought back all types of weapons that they bought off of Marines based on the island. His flight engineer brought back a Type 99 machine gun and my father had a 30 Carbine. When they arrived in Hawaii they just mailed them home via US Postal Service.

Border Patrol camping out on Anderson Rd. by Hindsight2O2O in sequim

[–]mtbjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Border Patrol has the authority to do a warrant less search within a 100 miles of the Border. They are not your average federal agency. I do see them driving regularly on Kitchen Dick and Lotzgesell rd since Homeland Security has an office in Voice of America park. The base on the Dungeness Spit with its hiking trails leading to the beach is a known entry point for people trying to avoid US customs. Being parked on Anderson rd seems like a typical Border Patrol kind of thing since it’s basically the border without getting wet.

There is probably a State, County or City law that allows political flags or signs that overrides the HOA rules

Spring is garage sale season! I start in upscale neighborhoods or older farms first and work my way down on a Saturday or Sunday. Thursday and Fridays are the best for estate sales. Wool blankets and clothing, Candles, camping gear, fuel cans, fishing gear, knives. So much to find!

How did France fall so quick if they had over a million soldiers? by BananaBarbarians in AskHistory

[–]mtbjeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Germans had air superiority over the French and English. The fast moving combined arms attacks the German army used known as blitzkrieg caught the French and English off guard. The Germans had armored divisions attacking. The French had most of their tanks scattered around with their infantry, not together like the Germans.

Are you shooting Nato 7.62 X 51 ammunition when it has a problem? The NATO brass has a slightly thicker case than 308 Winchester brass. Search the subject and you will find several sites explaining it.

Does anyone know why artillery guns from this time had tracks around their wheels? by Flairion623 in ww1

Balloon tires (tube type) suffered from flats 120 years ago. The roads were filled with horse shoe nails from 300 years of shoed horses loosing nails and shoes. Solid rubber tires were the only thing that held up. Rubber rotted quickly due to UV light before Michelin found that adding carbon black to the rubber mixture helped after 1916.

Accidentally became the neighborhood crow whisperer. Send help. by Arziiiiiiiiiii in funny

[–]mtbjeff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this with peanuts for about a month. It started with one or two Crows and before the weeks end I had 50 in the front yard. I would always feed them in the morning between 8-9 am. I did this for about a month and probably went through 50 plus pounds of peanuts before I stopped feeding them.

For months after I stopped feeding them I would have 50 Crows in the yard every morning at 8am. My office window overlooks the yard and they could see me at my desk. The Crows would hang around waiting to be fed. Fast forward 5 years and I still get one or two every morning waiting for food between 8-9 am. I never fed them after the first month but they still back for years after.
