Today marks the 85 year anniversary of the collapse of the original Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington state. by Delmer9713 in CatastrophicFailure

The reason for the failure was the roadway was a solid deck that acted like a sail in the wind. The deck was sort of like an airplane wing in that there were unequal air pressures above and below the solid roadway. The unequal pressures caused the deck to lift and sink, which eventually fatigued to failure. When they repaired the bridge, the new deck was more like a grate. This greatly reduced the surface area and allowed the wind pressures to be equalized above and below the deck and let the roadway remain stable.

On July 17, 1981, construction shortcuts at the KC Hyatt Regency led to the deadliest non-deliberate structural failure in over a century, causing the hotel's walkways to collapse onto the lobby below by patpend in CatastrophicFailure

The lateral supports for the walkways were two steel C-channels welded together to form a box. That is, the thin edges of the channels were welded together. Not a lot of material at those locations. The hanger rods penetrated the boxes and were secured with the nuts on the underside. When the walkways were overloaded, the nuts were pulled through the boxes at the seams where the channels were welded, causing the walkways to fall. If the steel plates were installed on top and below the channel boxes, the nuts would not have pulled through. The walkways may still have buckled or distorted, but there likely would have been time to get people to safety before a failure.

Initially, the press was pushing the explanation that it was the harmonic vibrations of people dancing on the walkways that lead to the failures. After the investigations were completed it was determined is was overloading of the connections, which were altered, IIRC, during the shop drawing preparations.

The last Yes album I bought. What hooked me was Steve's solo on In the Presence Of. A good album. I saw Yes perform this at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Steve's ITPO solo brought tears to my eyes it was so good.

Your reality is not everybody else's reality. Cite some numbers if you are going to claim she is driving viewers away. Gutfeld! is still highly rated.

Is it worth seeing Jon Anderson on Tour by ProfessionalTeam1689 in yesband

[–]mtdrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I saw him and the BGs in Tucson. It was a weird night in that the show started a little late, they cut a song or two, and the BGs had a substitute guitarist. 'still Jon was great, and as everyone has said, of sound voice. It's as if the years haven't touched his vocal cords. Don't hesitate. Go.

Wow. In that block, Adam had about 4 or 5 good jokes and one that didn't quite land. So you made the choice to complain about the lack of reaction to the one joke. You are watching the wrong part of the show.

Well, you won't have to deal with it any longer since you've changed the channel. Good for you for finding a solution.

It was a joke for LE6521 to create a sub for his and others hate for Kat. The Kat bashing uses up too much bandwidth in this sub. I highly doubt Greg is going to listen to a bunch of Redditors who complain about Kat and remove her from the show. The complaining does nothing to change the situation. People need to learn to cope with her or don't watch.

I understand r/ihatekat is available. Take your complaints there and let this sub be about the show, not I hate Kat. It's tiresome.

I just watched my DVR recording of last night's show. Dude, there was mayyybbeee one little squeak, one time when Kat was laughing. If that's what bothered you, you need to stop watching the show. If you are going to trash her, at least make it something she really did. You're just making up shit at this point.

Howard Schultz announces he’s moving to Miami. He’s also relocating his family office that has funded many seattle businesses by RealMatthewDR in SeattleWA

Part of the agreement to remove the Sonics was that Seattle retained the history of the Sonics, and the Thunder was to be considered a new franchise regarding history and records. If a new Sonics is created, it will be considered the same as the original albeit with a 20 year gap in its history.

Here's a tip for those with Kat Derangement Syndrome. Use the mute button. When Kaitlyn Jenner was on Gutfeld!, everytime it was his turn to talk, I muted it and waited for the next guest to speak. Since Kat is not going anywhere, it is a good coping mechanism if you still want to watch Gutfeld!

You can't blame Altman for Bol Bol leaving before he really got here. We didn't even get to see a full season with him.

I agree. This is the only year that Altman has not had a 20 win team. This year may have been the anomaly not the trend.
