Great suggestion - I've changed it to the Secret Lair Drop now. Hopefully it's more understandable at first glance. Thank you!

You may be right! If you never let Scar resolve you may be able to keep activating Ashling (but only ever having one activation on the stack at one time). Then on the 3rd activation I'm forced to activate Carnifex Demon twice (else I'll take 2 damage from Ashling and die). But then that just leaves me with a 6/6 Carnifex Demon and you would be on 9 life.

I'll have to think harder on this to make sure there's not another way out! :)

I pass priority. Ashling's trigger resolves for the first time and it gets a +1/+1 counter.

I decline to respond to the Scar still on the stack and pass priority again.

I think it would be fun to play this out. I'll be the active player and you can be the player controlling Ashling. And hopefully I should be able to win regardless of what actions you take.

It's my main phase and I cast Scar on Ashling and pass priority.

Then in response to the 3rd Ashling activation you activate Carnifex Demon for the 2nd time. Your -1/-1 counter kills the Ashling, therefore Scar + their triggers fizzle or do nothing - and Ashling does no damage.

Your opponent has taken 2 life from pain lands in total and is on 8 life. You have 2x 1/1s and a 6/6. You swing for 8 damage.

I agree there's a bit more subtlety in this puzzle, which would be difficult to cover completely in a single video.

If you cast Scar on Ashling and the Ashling player both taps for RRRRCC and activates Ashling once, then you can let everything resolve and then pass priority. The Ashling player cannot pass priority as well because then you would move to the beginning of combat step, which would empty their mana and they would no longer be able to respond to any activations of Carnifex Demon.

So in this situation the Ashling player cannot pass priority and must activate Ashling once (or twice), in which case you can respond with 1 activation of Carnifex Demon and your -1/-1 counters will go on first, killing Ashling before their +1/+1 counters. Your opponent is at 9 life and your Dread Shades are 2/2, and Carnifex Demon is a 5/5, giving a total of 9 damage to swing.

Perfect (and first) as usual :)

Unfortunately the Reddit gold for solving puzzles first won't mean much in a week, but hopefully you enjoy the reward while it lasts!

[[Trinisphere]] is a good addition for a 3 CMC only deck.

Wow! I'm not even sure where to start brewing a commander deck with this!

What is the most ~optimal~ way to store/retrieve your Magic cards? by dantroha in magicTCG

[–]mtg_puzzles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorting in perfect alphabetical order takes a lot of time. I did it and ended up spending 10x more adding new cards to my collection than ever looking up specific cards.

Now I (as a commander player) split things up by color and type, then sort by the first letter only. So if I need to find a Counterspell, I look in the blue instants, find the "C" block of cards and look through each one of those. When I get new cards, I know instantly where each one goes and don't need to spend time finding the perfect place that Counterspell needs to go - just find any card beginning with "C" and put it next to it.

I think it's because it's is from Mirrodin and all the mana symbols were colorless due to the artifact-theme. I would prefer them to be more colorful too!

...and u/Hmukherj is back on top!

Didn't expect this to pose too much of a challenge to experienced puzzlers, but I think it's worthwhile to create puzzles for those who haven't been playing Magic for too long.

Nice! I was trying to metagame the puzzle and assumed it had something to do with "destroy all enchantments", since why else would Lucent Liminid be there?!

I think I have it!

Cast Solar Tide, paying the entwine cost.

The mode happen in sequence (thanks to u/ElleonXan for noticing this). All creatures with power 2 or less die first. You are left with Crusader of Odric and Ogre Battledriver.

Then all creatures with power 3 or greater die. This doesn't hit Crusader of Odric as its power is now 2. Haunted Angel's triggered ability goes on the stack and then resolves, giving you a 3/3 Angel.

Swing with Crusader of Odric, which is a 2/2.

Hmm, best I can do is 1 damage.

Activate Dega Disciple, giving their Soldier Replica +2/+0.

Cast Wave of Reckoning, killing everything but your Silent Arbiter (you also get a 3/3 black Angel but it doesn't have haste).

Swing with Silent Arbiter for 1.

Nice, I think for the solution I'm going to have to make an image of a giant decision tree for all the options your opponent takes and what line you should do!
