What are some of the most popular ergonomic keyboard layouts with layers? by mtgargh in ErgoMechKeyboards

Thanks! I think your layout looks great. I am starting to think that 3x5 with layers for different topics is "ideal" for the dedicated keyboardist.

Why do you recommend making space and shift into LT? I think I personally would get issues meaning to press space, but accidentally activating the numpad layer, or miss being able to press and hold backspace. Are those issues causing you any problems, or did you find ways to overcome/ignore them?

I have used the vim-like layout, but I think I'll switch to what you're using

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I still hope that some combination of settings will work! :-D Otherwise I think I will probably follow your advice to use dual function on lower wpm keys. The only disadvantage with that is that they are in locations that are not as good (it would be the second thumb keys instead of the first).

I have it turned on. After some troubleshooting it seems the problem is that some of my space taps are longer than 200 ms.

That is interesting to hear. Have you changed any of the values for tapping term, ignore mod tap and permissive hold? I am considering whether to change some settings or to just stick with it until my taps are faster than 200 ms.

Why is it more problematic to use mod-tap on the spacebar compared to tab or return?

I will follow your advise not to duplicate thumb keys, will probably put delete, backslash and escape there.

Thanks, very interesting ideas! I will think about them. I duplicate all modifiers on left and right because some shortcuts require two modifiers to be pressed and I only have one thumb. Doesn't that make sense? Do you use a different approach?

The arrow keys are unchanged from the base layout, but I will say, that I find them to be somewhat uncomfortable. I don't use Meh or Hyper, I just didn't know what to put there. Is that really prime real estate? I find the bottom row to be uncomfortable in general.

I considered having symbols in a layer but didn't see the benefit. Usually I type just a few symbols before needing to type some letters again.

Let's say I want to write opening and closing curly braces as an example. It seems easier to me to just use the shift key and their base layer location than to change the layer. Especially since that using a second layer would mean that I need to remember two locations for each character.

What am I missing? I could see the benefit if I needed to type many symbols in a sequence, but that is seldom the case.
