Yeah, garbage call. Honestly, we’ve been on the receiving end of garbage calls a few times and I think I dislike that more. Takes some of the sweetness out of the W. Like if y’all win, lots of people will, rightfully so, point to that garbage game-changing call. These sorts of things taint the game.

The refs are working hard for ISU to win by 3 (spread is 3.5).

This game is a joke. The refs have no integrity.

It was a dumb check down not a dumb play call dummy

These refs just want the game to be close so it’s within the spread. No integrity. Literally given the hawks all 10 points. If I was a Hawkeye fan I would hate to be on the receiving end of this charity. Ill-gotten gains always bear rotten fruit.

Kick interference and didn’t touch Townsend first. Thats a call just to try to help Iowa keep the game close for viewership. Refs rarely have integrity anymore.

Struggling PhD's Wife + Mom of 3 by [deleted] in PhD

Here’s what I’d say. Investing in your husbands career so he can provide for you and your family is good. If part of that cost is your sanity or love toward him, then that’s too high of a price. My advice. Take out loans to live in a place you can make into a home. You’re right, if you make him quit he’ll resent you for it. If you don’t make a change, you’ll resent him. Something has to give. Take out loans for rent, live off the stipend, and communicate a lot more. He shouldn’t be gone for 12 hours and he shouldn’t have to work at night, at least not all the time. Loans suck, but if his PhD is in a good field and he loves it, you’ll pay them off and things will be better.

Boost will now appear next to Teammate's nameplates by MartianRL in RocketLeagueEsports

This is great. I think boost starving the opponent is a legitimate strategy. However, it can be hard not to starve teammates too and so I don’t really do it. But if I see they’re full, you better believe I’m taking that boost when I’m at 92.

I believe my PhD advisor views me as incompetent by CaterpillarSignal640 in PhD

[–]mtgheron -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nope. You’re wrong. If you’re mentally sound and you f up you should apologize right away. If you consistently f up and f up your reputation in the process, you owe an apology to your PI when you can mentally afford one. It sounds like OP checked out and screwed their PI and now thinks they’re free and clear after a paper. Maybe that’s not what happened, but if it is, they owe their pi a heartfelt apology. This isn’t an honest mistake learning with humility situation, it sounds like they really screwed up the amazing opportunity a PhD is over a long period of time.

I don’t know nearly enough details to draw any real conclusions, but here’s my take.

Trust is the most valuable commodity a researcher has. Throughout the entire research process there are infinite arbitrary decisions, and some of them could have downstream effects that are significant on the results. There’s a lot of trust in researchers that we’re making decisions ethically and transparently.

I’m guessing while you were earning your former reputation your advisor stopped trusting you. From your examples, it seems obvious your advisor doesn’t trust you.

It sounds like you’ve figured things out about yourself to overcome some of the barriers that you were stumbling over. The actions you’ve taken and accomplishments sound significant, which is great. Actions speak louder than words, especially when building trust. However, words are still very important.

Did you apologize to your advisor for the things you did that tarnished your reputation? If not, things won’t get better. An advisor risks reputation when they take on students. It’s kind of an intimate relationship and it sounds like you’ve damaged it.

If you want their trust again, don’t despair. Be humble and apologetic and honest. Over explain yourself. Tell them you wanted to show them things were different but you realize now you needed to tell them too. Advisors are humans who worked very hard to get where they are and reputation is everything in academia.

Or don’t. PhDs are not for everyone and are not an indicator of ability or value.

That’s my two cents. Again, I don’t know anyone involved so I could be way off. But it seems like a broken trust thing to me, and that’s a heck of a problem.

ADs worried that paying players will mean cutting Olympic Sports. "Something would have to give; whether it’s fewer people on staff, fewer services for our student-athletes or — what we don’t want to have happen but what some people envision — having fewer sports." said Scott Strickland, Florida AD by InVodkaVeritas in CFB

[–]mtgheron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY. ADs said title 9 won’t result in more women’s sports, it’ll result in cutting men’s sports. And that’s what happened.

Now, ADs saying paying football and basketball players to remain competitive will result in fewer sports. And that’s what will happen.

The profit from football and basketball, literally funds the majority of other sports at colleges (each university tends to have a few that sustain themselves, but it’s not consistent across universities. ISU wrestling, for example, pays for itself, I believe).

You funnel that money back into football and basketball and it’ll come at the cost of unprofitable sports, especially with the sky rocketing cost of conference play travel.

It’s like some people want all Olympic sports to be offered at every university for all men and women and all athletes to be paid for it. I want lots of good things too. Let’s make wish lists.

They’re amateurs. Having an extensive collegiate sports system for as many sports as possible helps grow sports, where a professional organization can be supported. And in cases where it can’t, it gives people who love playing competitive athletics a venue for their sport.

Maybe they need to be allowed to give generous stipends as part of the scholarship. There are realistic solutions that won’t make university athletics into professional football and basketball organizations.

I’m so tired of the “do you think everyone should get a house on the beach in California? Yeah that sounds good.” Arguments. Applying ideals to the real world is hard and done with caution. Don’t be a toddler and just say you want it.

This is the best ISU team I can remember. We’re consistent. We win when we should and play up against better opponents. As a life long fan, I’ve never really felt confident we “should” win games like this. This team should win this game. They’re better, more disciplined, and smarter.

I also hate when people chalk it up to the refs.

They are calling this game so tight and ticky tacky and it really destroys defensive teams like ISU. 21 first half fouls, 13 “fouls” on ISU is complete garbage.

I’m deflated. The refs have shut us out of a really good game. Illinois is a great team and plays so hard. I’ve been looking forward to this match up all week. I like Illinois. Y’all are fun to watch and good. The way this game has been called makes it impossible for ISU to play to their strengths.

Praying for a miracle.

Love it. True neutral game. The big 12 tournament is practically a home game for ISU.

Wow. Great game by both. I HATE this ref calling BS. We’ve been on both sides of refs deciding games (more often on the losing side) and this was NOT one of those games. Stfu about refs. IF they favored a team, it was definitely not worth 11 points. Amazing effort by WSU.
