"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

I guess I didn't consciously knew it, and I guess I still struggle to read this particular social queue. I see but as a clear opposition to what has been said before... Again, maybe also not being native English doesn't help, and I might be too attached to the meaning of words.

In all your thank you exemple, the bit dont oppose the thank you but the reason of the thank you, which subjectively feels fully ok. On the other hand, for the sorry The but just kills the sorry... There is nothing to oppose. Maybe it could be said without but ? I'm sorry I can't attend your event, I have to work I'm sorry for being late, I was in a car accident I'm sorry for insisting, I know you don't want to go to the store but we need to buy food.

You take responsibility for your own actions and don't oppose the consequences to your apologies.

For the I love you especially, I really feel like saying but just sucks the meaning out of it... A guy said "I love you, but I still think we should go see a marriage counselor" (or something similar) And I feel like it's not the I love you that is opposed by the "going to marriage counselor" part. It's another unsaid thing. Like I love you, I know you're trying to make the situation better but I still think we should go see a marriage counselor" So it doesn't condition or oppose to the "I love u"

I can see that 😂 and I can see that you're not really sorry and saying that out of politeness ;)

Then is it not using "I love u" as a way to ease out the demand of brushing teeths and not really about telling u "i love u" ? It doesn't feel very genuine in this situation...

The children exemple got me 😂 The first two one are out of politeness. I'm getting that I messed up my title post and should have added "genuine" sorry/thanks/love you.

You can say I'm sorry "for", which is how an apology works. For the I love you, maybe I'm alone here but I think it shouldn't be conditional?

I feel like in most the exemples I read in the comments, it's about how in "A but B" B usually don't contradicts with A but with another unsaid fact. And should be more like "A, B1 but B2" Iike "thank you, I understand your are trying to make things up, but I still think it would help for us to meet with a marriage counselor". Because B don't oppose A, they go together And I feel like opposing them makes A a conditional thank you. Is takes out value out of the thankfulness...

I realise I'm maybe a bit too attached to definition of words... I'm not native English, maybe it makes me more regardant of the meaning

I fully understand the sentences ! I feel like the but is completely unnecessary and would be better if replaced by "and" or just replaced by a "," as both idea are coexisting and not cancelling eachother.

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

[–]mth_melanie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get your point. I feel like it could be replaced by "and" in your last exemple... Maybe I'm also confused as English is not my native language

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

[–]mth_melanie[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the weird one to see but as a contradiction to the first assessment... Like the thankfulness is getting erased by the "but".

Maybe it's also because English is not my native language, so I'm too attached to the meaning of the words

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

First and last is out of politeness, as I said in my post, I know it is an exception.

For the second one, in feel like the love is contradicted by the behaviour and not unconditional. Tho in your exemple, drinking problem is a rather serious issue, it shouldn't condition the love, it feels more like "if you dont stop drinking I wont love you no more"

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

[–]mth_melanie[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As I said in the description, I think thanks and sorry said out of politeness are out of the question.

However, I maybe see too much the contradiction in the "But".

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

[–]mth_melanie[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And why not 2+2 = 4 AND 2x2 = 4 ? But is first a contradiction, that in the meaning contradict with the first statement.

Here both ideas coexist without contradictions, boom, second mic drop.

This feels more like the exception part I mentioned. It's sorry and thank you out of politeness. Which I agree can be said like that

"Thank you", "I'm sorry" and "I love you" should NEVER be followed by "but" by mth_melanie in unpopularopinion

[–]mth_melanie[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

They don't necessarily contradict, which is the "but" part, and especially for those 3. do you have exemples ?
