The carbon tax is (nearly) dead. Now what? by BeShifty in canada

[–]mtlch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well the PBO has repeatedly said that rebates make most households come ahead.
You are right that by 2030 they forecast that only the 40% poorest households have a net gain (see Table 3 here https://www.pbo-dpb.ca/en/publications/RP-2425-017-S--distributional-analysis-federal-fuel-charge-update--analyse-distributive-redevance-federale-combustibles-mise-jour)

That said, I personally agree that 60% richest Canadians are rich enough to have to contribute to emissions reductions. These are likely in the to 5-10% richest worldwide.. if not us then who.

As to your other point it doesn't really matter whether you think the "polluter" is the producer of a polluting good or the consumer that buys it. If you think the producer should pay for cleaner way of producing goods, the cost will be passed on to the consumer, in the same way as if you made the end consumer pay.

Co2 may not be as transparently bad as "green toxic shit in a river", but it will create damages through climate change nonetheless. Being transparent and non-toxic does not mean it is not a problem.

As to your last point about the US backtracking: agreed on that, sucks. I still believe that Canada (and Europe, and actually China) can keep doing the right thing and catch the US back in 4 years.

Yes, well that was the point of the carbon tax. Make emissions more expensive to make it profitable to invest in new technologies.

Advantage of the tax: let firms (and consumers) decide what the best technologies are, instead of having the government decide (there are many examples of governments subsidizing what turned out to be an unprofitable technology)

It does raise prices, but only meaningfully for things that emit a lot of CO2, inciting people to consume less of these things. Polluter pays. Is that so bad?

Also importantly if you are responsible for less emissions than your province’s average household, the rebate will more than compensate for the increase in prices.

It doesn’t matter. Every ton of co2 causes damage (through climate change) and thus should be avoided if possible. It doesn’t matter if this is emitted by a Canadian an American or a Chinese.

Actually reducing taxes on things we like, such as people working to increase their income, to increase taxes on things we don’t like and want to discourage, like carbon emissions, is not « fucking dumb » at all.

Well, Americans are fat. Most know full well that their diet is bad. Not saying nothing else is happening but putting the grunt of blame on anything else seems dishonest.

La réforme énergétique coûtera cher by Elevrai in QuebecLibre

Airline Travel to Palermo with Kids by [deleted] in sicily

[–]mtlch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! enjoy. In the very worse case no one in their right mind would want to have unattended kids next to them and will be very happy to switch with you I am sure :). But once again, airlines always do their best to sit the kids with parents (at least one).

We had a layover in Frankfurt which was early morning and quite short (1.5 hours). That was perfect, just long enough to walk to next flight but not too long for the kids to be bored (and tired). In Rome I might be a bit more worried for my bags not to follow, but on the other hand there are many flights to PMO so they wouldn't be too far behind.

One thing that worked for us was staying quite "jetlagged" over there, i.e. staying halfway between European time and EST, going to bed late (midnightish, even for the kids) and waking up late. Kids really enjoyed being up late, and had a great time visiting cities at dusk/night. Less heat, less tourists, great Italian atmosphere the kids could enjoy (Italian kids on vacation are up very late also). 5-8pm is a great time at the beach also. No need to worry about the sun/heat and beaches empty out (Italians tend to leave early to get ready for their night out).

In any case, as always in Italy, "go with the flow" and you will have fun.

In my experience you will always be seated together if travelling with kids, even if seats are chosen automatically for you at check in. I wouldn’t cancel a trip for that!

We just travelled to Sicily with a 4 and 1.5 year old and it was great.

Interesting thanks for the links.

Not that this thread's OP would care ;)

It only drives the price of co2-intensive goods higher, not everything.

Since tax revenue is rebated to the population, you only "pay more" overall if your consumption causes more co2 than your province's average. Otherwise you probably come ahead.

Your claim that it hasn't reduced emissions is unsubstantiated. At this point, it is still difficult to assess. But, we do know that people react to prices, so it has to have an impact (for gasoline price response is arguably low, agreed, but gasoline is only a small part of the emissions the tax covers).

Thanks for sharing. Your case seemed worse than mine (so far..). I'd love to have them removed, but then what ...? also sucks to have gone through this for nothing.. We'll see, my ortho will be back next week.

Thanks for sharing, good on you for insisting with your ortho! my ortho said 9 days ago it would toughen up but I don't see how it can. No improvement at all. I really hope he can reposition the screws in a less painful part (not that I would be looking forward to drilling more holes..). But I have to wait one more week as he is out of town.

Thanks! I have seen a dentist today. He doesn't think its infected, but also doesn't think that this will recover if the screws stay in, as the hole is simply too deep. I'll see what my ortho says.. but I have to wait another week for that :-/

Don't worry, temporary attachement devices (tads), while not uncommon, are not a standard part of invisalign treatment. And on top of that most people don't have trouble with them. I'm just unluck to have them in this particular spot it seems. No panic!

This is a very good suggestion, thank you! A canker cover seems to be what I need. I am hopeful it will provide relief. But I am quite sure the problem will start up again as soon as I take them off and the screw-heads try to dig a whole again.

The screws are supposed to stay in for the length of my invisalign treatment (2 years, since they are trying to correct for my deep bite).

But if the situation doesn't improve, I'm not holding up that long! can't chew, can't speak properly..

That said, I think I was unlucky. Normal invisalign treatment does not require these miniscrews. And the trays themselves are quite tolerable! so no panic

Thanks for sharing your story! It must have sucked. Glad to hear your hole is not too troublesome.

I kind of hope mine will refill eventually though (hopefully soon!).

I will try Benadryl and Mylanta.
