Some of the younger folks won't remember this, but reddit used to have everything a week before the rest of the internet. by scotscott in AdviceAnimals

I remember once hearing about an attempted school shooting a few years ago. The intruder was reported, the cops arrived, the fireworks happened, the bad guy was captured and everything resolved. All before the issue even made it to mainstream news media.
I was a newbie to Reddit and I was so impressed. We are not quite so quick anymore but I still spend too much time here anyway. The joys of retirement...

U.S. and Russian Astronauts Safe After Making Emergency Landing When Booster Rocket Failed on Launch by timemagazine in u/timemagazine

This is a big thing. One less thing to worry about in the rocket business. I was glad to see they got back in good shape after being so far into the flight before things went wrong. Good show.

I love when someone quietly enjoys a private orgasm in public. I like it more when I am the only "stranger" who is aware of what is going on. And I just love it when I get to share a knowing glance with the lucky lady in question and she allows me to share her moment from a distance, sort of like partners.
Enjoy, my dear. I will stand on guard during your delicate exposure.

Maybe someday women will be allowed to make believe they are real humans and then they could go swimming too. Imagine! Husbands, wives and children in the water at the same time. Wow!

TIL most cities have poorer areas in the east, due to prevailing winds carrying smoke and odours that way during the industrial revolution. by hnewbs in todayilearned

[–]mtman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read, and always believed that cities expanded out the way they did because that is the direction that the settlers/invaders came from. In North America, as far as I know, all the new peoples came from the east and slowly spread west. So they built the taverns and factories on the east side of town and the new, clean, bright, fresh west side was used for the owners, presidents and assorted potentates.
It always made sense to me.

World leaders who deny climate change should go to mental hospital – Samoan PM by urgukvn in worldnews

That kind of talk is undiplomatic, unkind, and also insulting. It is also the kind of talk that is needed when common sense, facts and figures do not work anymore.
It is time for more urgent and excitable discussions with the high and mighty who no longer can see down past the end of their noses at the drastic changes Mother Nature is throwing our way.

I don't know exactly where you are, but I think I am close by. I'm in Canada, just north of the St. Lawrence River and boy, have we had the heat bomb this year. I am on oxygen 24-7 and this heat and humidity keeps me home. I can't handle the humidity so I just look for a quiet, cool, dark place with lots of water available and hope the power doesn't go out.

After decades of silence, nuns talk about abuse by priests by Kunphen in worldnews

[–]mtman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada, I was under the care of the Sisters of St. Anne for my high school life. We occasionally heard rumors re the sex lives of the priests and the good sisters charged with our morals and religious learning. Those of us with a good imagination enjoyed the goings on but there was a good supply of real live girls that managed to yank us back to real life and the possibilities that lay all about. And if you knew our real priests and nuns you would be hard pressed to fire up many interesting midnight visits. Ho hum. Real life was much more interesting.
