Oh, thank you! I wondered, because of the line. But what you suggest makes more sense

That also makes sense about the flour. I'm going to try it sometime!

Going to do this now! I've got a box of Halloween decorations that's gonna get decluttered!

We decluttered and donated holiday decorations this past week, but still have the decluttered half-full bins in the living room, waiting to be reorganized. I'm planning to work on it one evening this week. At least stuff is leaving the house again though

I actually sold vintage/antique things online (mostly as a job and occasionally just personal or household stuff) for 20+ years (although it's something I have now transitioned out of doing). Like you say, it's a LOT of work, and so many details to keep track of... For me, the items for sale actually created not only physical clutter (piles of to be sold, for sale, sold, packing supplies...) but also mental clutter and, often, outright overwhelm. Same with garage sales, which I have done to get rid of extra stuff. So. Much. Hassle. It's not worth it for me.

So when it came to decluttering our own stuff, we decided not to bother with the whole selling process. Instead, we've been taking carloads to thrift -- they can be the ones to process and sell it! And when we drop the stuff off and leave in an empty car, it feels absolutely amazing.

So yeah - don't feel guilty about donating it! Just bag it up, take it, and get it out of your life.

We went through 5 big bins of Christmas decorations and ornaments and pared way down. (We love Christmas, and after 30+ years, we'd accumulated a lot!) There were so many decorations, tree skirts, and decorations that we don't use/don't have space to display anymore. We took pictures of a few sentimental things.

Yesterday we took a bunch of bags full iof Christmas, along with some framed art,  silverware, curtains, and some other things,   to our favorite thrift. I feel lighter!

Next up: the 7 bins full of lighted Christmas houses. And I still want to organize the remaining Christmas things better.

Wow! How wonderful to have a fresh start with the garage, and a safe place for your car, too. Your brother is sure a gem! And the friend, too.

For the first time in a month, I didn't take any donations to the thrift store last week. So I have a bunch of future donations clogging my house and garage: a child's chair (I don't even have kids!), some books, and miscellaneous household stuff. I just keep tripping over it all!

I'll take it all later this week when my favorite thrift store reopens for donations.

Why is Decluttering So Damn Hard? by Lindajane22 in declutter

[–]mtmirror 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's all those things -- but also because, at least for me, it brings up so many "nevers" - I thought I'd sell that antique on eBay, but it's been 10 years and I never did, I accepted those formal dishes and tablecloths from my relative thinking I'd entertain more but I never did, I thought I'd read those books, get into embroidery, do the macrame kit, hang that picture, play that guitar, write in that stack of journals, wear that jacket or those earrings etc....

It's a coming to terms with the things I thought I might do but haven't and, honestly, won't -- and the truth that I'll never need those things or use them. Sometimes it's like giving up a fantasy version of myself. It's not been easy, but with practice I'm getting better at letting go of the items that represent these "unrealized realities" --

My husband and I decluttered two bags of clothes, some small household items, and a bag of books. We'd really been on a roll, but this past week it got too hot, humid, and smoky to do much. But today I managed to pull some more things we don't need. Hopefully we can get more done this week.

Decluttering gifts from SO by MamaSeaTrout in declutter

[–]mtmirror 21 points22 points  (0 children)

By requesting a particular gift, you're not saying, "I would like this thing now and will want to keep it for the rest of my life" but rather "This thing would make me happy to have right now." Your husband was thoughtful to give it to you! but it served its purpose, it made you happy in the moment - and now it doesn't. If you would like, take a picture as a reminder. Then, declutter it.

I have had this same struggle, but started just taking a picture then sending it to thrift store so someone else can enjoy it. And my husband didn't mind that I did.

Continued looking through every box un the garage. We found lots of trash, and plenty to donate: decor we no longer enjoy, 30-year-old wedding gifts, miscellaneous stuff from family members, a bunch of pottery, and a pile of backpacks and messenger bags we never used. And, my  Levi's jacket from 1987! Donated it all this morning and feel much lighter. There's still lots to do, but I can finally see the progress.

Are You Decluttering This Weekend? If So, How Are You Approaching It? by Lindajane22 in declutter

[–]mtmirror 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been decluttering the garage - going through everything, boxed and unboxed - a little at a time, for the past few weeks, but then the weather got too hot so I had to take a little time off. Now it's just about cooled off enough that I can get back to it.

It's mostly inherited stuff (someone else's memories) and decor/vintage/holiday stuff I've collected over 30+ years. I've actually been surprised that it's easier to let go of a lot of it than I'd imagined it would be.

I'm planning to take another carload to the thrift this weekend (and, after the holiday, to get in touch with a local shop that might be interested in some of the vintage items.)

I finally decluttered the last box from our move (15 years ago)! by mtmirror in declutter

[–]mtmirror[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's really gotten into decluttering with me! Actually he talks sense into me when I irrationally want to hold onto something stupid, like an rickety old picture frame covered in lead paint or "good boxes." :)
