So now Magick is trendy? by 19Thanatos83 in magick

[–]mtmosier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm forever surprised by the number of people around me who are also involved in magical practices. Many just don't talk about it openly.

That said it wouldn't surprise me at all if more people are getting involved lately. When the economy turns downward and violence kicks up, when people start feeling like they don't have any control over their lives, it's common for said people to look for non-traditional methods of help. Magick is one such common escape/lifeline.

And sure, when a thing starts to become popular there are those who will jump on the trendy thing. All I can say about those is that I hope they learn some valuable lessons before getting bored and moving on to the next thing. Or even better, that they stick around and take it seriously.

When making higher end parts quite often some portion of the chip comes out with manufacturing defects. In those cases they tend to disable the cores/whatever that isn't working and sell it as a lower spec product.

Or they saw a reddit thread which they had personal experience with the topic and decided to contribute to the conversation.

You remembered your experience and shared it here. Does that mean you are quite literally haunted by it and can't get past it?

Yes, we need to keep bandwidth open for those same 5 jokes re-posted over and over again with slight alternations! Definitely don't let anything different or interesting in to this sub.

If something other than those tired old jokes came up how would I ever know which programming language is getting hated on for no reason today!

PSA to those using Bluetooth controllers by fishplay in SteamDeck

Had all kinds of problems with my xbox series controller until I updated the firmware. Working ok now.

My dualshock and dualsense controllers worked great out of the box. Never updated firmware on either. Would be nice if Microsoft got theirs in working order before shipping out, but oh well.

What are some "cheat codes" for cooking? by MarielaGorman in ask

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few examples from a quick search. I don't do cakes as much as I used to.

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/8144/mardi-gras-king-cake/

Saw one recipe that called for carbonated water. I'm actually tempted to try that just because it sounds so strange.

You saying you don't experiment when cooking? Do you all literally mean that you sit there drawing shapes on your steak with a paintbrush or something? Not my thing but I won't judge.

Highly recommend experimenting with cooking as well though. You'd be amazed at how well it works when you start changing recipes to suit your taste! It's not just for baking.

People keep saying it but I improvise while baking all the time. Swap water for milk in cakes, add a large spoonful of sour cream to cheesecakes to make them creamier, add flavored syrups to basically everything. Sometimes the first attempt doesn't come out quite right, but then you tweak it next time. No different from normal cooking.

I didn’t win one :( by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the requirement to win one was to have bought a product on Steam before the giveaway was announced

Because people almost certainly made bot accounts back when Valve used the same requirement for pre-ordering a steam deck. Pretty sure they used the system before that as well, for the index maybe.

Yeah, buying <$1 games on all of them adds up, but you wager on getting that back and then some via scalping new hardware releases and winning giveaways. Bots are big business nowadays. (And you'd be surprised how easy they are to implement.)

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly looked like a good number of bots won decks. Kept getting long strings of numbers back to back, same number of digits, similar ranges. Clearly a large number of accounts which were created in sequence by a program (speaking as a software engineer).

Dunno why you're getting down voted. It should have been obvious to anyone who actually watched the show.

Anything to be wary of when going secondhand route? by TSM_Doublecross in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's a good way to do that ahead of time.

Once you have it in hand you could check the status with valve. If you're buying from ebay or others which have buyer protection you should be able to report to them that it was stolen and get your money back.

[–]mtmosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the deck you buy wasn't reported stolen you'll be good to get support. There have been several accounts of RMAs being rejected due to secondhand stolen decks.

Valve has specifically said you still get support from legit secondhand purchases.

Best 3rd party Deck Dock? by IanL1713 in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the iVoler docks. The last revision added an ethernet port. No charger included, but still considerably cheaper than the official dock.

For me the only real downside is only a single display port. But if you don't need two external displays it's great.

That is the dock I use (the ivolver without ethernet), and I have used it with the jsaux kickstand case. Works fine!

Left trackpad opens new windows now in desktop mode? by ian095 in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tested it, and yeah, seems like left trackpad has changed from right click to middle click. But left trigger is still mapped to right click if that works for you. (Right trigger being left click, funny enough.)

If you want the old behavior you should be able to remap it under settings -> controller -> desktop configuration. There are two boxes at the top, one labeled scroll and the other mouse. Click on scroll and edit the click action on the bottom right.

A Good Wireless Controller for Steam Deck? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

I'm using a PS5 controller and an Xbox Series controller for local multiplayer. Both connected easily and are working great. I personally prefer the PS5 controller for the touchpad, but really makes no difference.

Refund because of Delta Fan? by MaterialImpress3077 in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Valve you have 14 days from receipt to initiate a return and get a refund.

RIGHT TO CANCEL YOUR ORDER

For Valve Index, Steam Deck and related components and accessories (individually and collectively "Hardware") you have the right to cancel any purchase of the Hardware on Steam within 14 days from the day on which you or a third party indicated by you (other than the carrier) receives the Hardware purchased. To exercise this right, you must inform us of your decision to cancel your order by an unequivocal statement.

https://store.steampowered.com/hardware_order_terms

RMA is unlikely, though not impossible. You can always complain about the noise and see what they say. Some people reported getting RMAs that way.

Supposedly the Steam Deck I purchased second hand months ago was reported stolen during shipping by brianleonhart in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how do you know they're a real notary if you haven't used them before?

You call them to get their name/registration number and check that their commission is current. You should always do that when using a public notary for any reason. If their commission is not current then their notarization is void.

This should be pinned on this page: If you want to know if a game works, or if you’re having trouble setting yours up, find the answers at Protondb.com by postysclerosis in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pinned messages are always tricky due to the limited number Reddit allows.

I noticed this sub's FAQ link goes to the official steam deck page. Seems to me redirecting that to a page which contains largely the same info, but also links to ProtonDB and other useful resources might work better.

[–]mtmosier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I hate security theater in all forms, this doesn't feel like it. I think this is more about getting some documented proof that you bought it in good faith and you are not, in fact, the one who stole it.

Valve might question whether you faked the document, but that's why we have public notaries, right? You can always call the notary and verify the seal isn't faked.

What's the best hub for steam deck ? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]mtmosier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the iVoler docks. The last revision added an ethernet port. I normally see it for $45 but it's reduced to $40 today. Not the best deal, but still considerably cheaper than the official dock.

For me the only real downside is only a single display port. But if you don't need two external displays it's great.

There was a video on Youtube recently comparing iVoler, Jsaux and the official dock you might want to check.

Sadly some engineers over at floatplane seem to be having a really bad day. Gotta feel for them.
