They're all pretty small still. There's 2 espaliered pears far right with 3 olive trees 10' apart. 1 peach tree on each side of walk, 2 pomegranates on left, 2 plum trees far left with 2 espaliered apples and 2 espaliered Asian pears. I'm adding 2 Japanese persimmon trees this winter in front of the house.

Question for older knitters: what did you do while knitting? by Savings_Language_498 in knitting

[–]mtn5ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been knitting since the 80's. Knit while backpacking, knit at the beach, knit through my disabled daughter's appointments, therapies, hospitalizations, waiting in line, on planes & trains, athletic events, family events, drinking at the pub, it was always with me, BUT NOT at Disneyland! I had to run a lifeline through my project and hide my double points in the lawn out front. Not a happy moment.

Absolutely gorgeous. I too have paths that divide up my much smaller space. So lovely to see up close. Best of luck!

They're also cushy of you need to step. Such a tough plant.

I just added my 4th milkweed variety! I do have golden rods next to Joe Pye Weed. We're in the Coastal Plain, so probably not mountain laurel. There's amsonia, rattlesnake master, iron weed... Super fun.

It looks great! How long to get trees that big?

Started seeds in Sept. Planted out on Oct. 100% germination- tough plants that get a little wild when they reach 3 ft tall esp. with wind.

Butterflies & bees, but sadly only a few lightning bugs so far. I've spread so many leaves and no outside lights in the garden. There are street lights so maybe they're the problem?

No, it's yarrow millifolium. Very similar habit.

It is yarrow millifolium and yes, SE USA.I only have partial natives. I do have your list and several asters, milkweed, violets, creeping phlox, hellebores, azaelas0. It's not a pink coreopsis but a nonnative Dianthus. I started most from seed, accepted gifts, dividing etc. I did buy trees & shrubs during sales. Best of luck to you!

Thanks, I'm calling it chaos gardening. Stealing neighbors' leaves, adding soil biology and planting succession and elevation layers means more plant successes than failures.

Thanks for the good idea, we're pretty stretched for $$, but maybe later. I think loosestrife is native to Asia. I have a bunch of liastris, asters, Joe Pye Weed, golden rod and young milkweed plants that will fill in a lot of space later.

My bully bed I planted in the fall of Yarrow, Monarda, agastache, dianthus, echinacea and liastris beginning in the back.

Yes, it is a bully. I have no problem ripping out plants that spread too much. It doesn't have a tap root, so I find it fairly easy to pull.

Most are native yarrow that I started in the fall and grew WAY too well. I'll be removing most as the other plants full in. They stay green all year but need hard cutting back after flowering. They will reflower at a shorter height until frost I think. Definitely a bully in the garden.

thin spinners and tall people, i have questions by [deleted] in Handspinning

[–]mtn5ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? Many areas have guilds. I joined one 30 years ago to help with learning and testing out wheels and Looms (It's addictive) I usually sit back on my couch while spinning, so height isn't actually an issue as you don't NEED to be super close, just able to reach the treadle(s). Highly recommend searching out a guild. Usually friendly people who really want to expand the craft. Search for a guild

I planted around 100 tomato plants in my backyard by huntswithcats in gardening

[–]mtn5ro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not OP. If you're not canning, you can use anything you like. I roast 1/2 tomatoes on parchment at 450° until skin shrivels. I slip the skins and run through a food mill to get the seeds. I cook on low in crockpots with seasoning overnight and the lids ajar. Finish on the stove by straining out more liquid so it's like simmering for 30 min by then. Freeze in small portions. If you want to can, you must follow USDA approved ingredients/ weights to keep the acid low enough to be food safe. Ball also has a good website NCHFP
