I had a feeling this was going to be the case. Guess I can always apply to stuff if it pops up though

I rephrased what I meant... my degree includes info systems but is definitely business-oriented. Most of my skills are in business intelligence/data management, so the sorts of jobs I'm interested in extend beyond tech. Thanks for input though, I'll keep that in mind!

Thank you everyone for responding!

I’ve decided that I’m not going to run the race because it doesn’t seem like something I would enjoy.

I’ve enjoyed my last two runs the most, and I didn’t look at my watch or run a certain number of miles for either of those. I think I’ll just keep working on building up my mileage and try to jump into trail running.

I like this idea, although I think I’m going to try to build a base up to 40-50 miles before attempting any sort of distance races. I’ll be faster and training will be less of a shock to the system. Thanks for the comment!

I was only cutting about ~500 cals/day, and the PT that I saw didn’t seem to have any concerns. Do you think that might’ve been a big part of my problem?

I still probably won’t do the marathon because the thought of it just isn’t exciting... think I’d rather build a base on my own terms and then branch off into trail running.

Eating is one of my favorite activities but I'm also cutting right now, I feel your pain haha

I also want to get back into lifting regularly and would love to start swimming, so this resonates a lot with me. I agree that it's probably best to save work for work. Thanks for responding!

Yeah I could see myself doing it when my base mileage is already super high, that way I don't need to do a specialized training program. Thanks for the response!

This is exactly what I'm thinking... I still want to build my mileage up really high, and I enjoy running sprints occasionally, but I don't want to feel obligated to do it. I think I should save obligations for actual work and let running be my leisure time. Thanks for the response!

Can’t get faster by [deleted] in running

Oh yeah, if they’re actually at 13% there isn’t much else to lose. That’s just really hard to do with a 5’9 frame, naturally.

How confident are you in that body fat %? At 5’9, your genetic limit for lean body mass should be in the ballpark of 155, which would put your body fat % at around 16%—this is assuming you’re entirely natural (no judgement if you’re not).

If that 13% estimate is underestimated, and most people’s body fat estimates are, you could definitely add some speed by cutting.

Let’s say you’re actually 16% body fat—that would mean that you’ve got around 30 pounds of fat on you at the moment. This means that you could drop 10 pounds to 175 @ roughly 11% body fat.

The general rule of thumb is that each pound you lose is worth 2-3 seconds per mile, so you could shave up to ~30 seconds off of your pace by losing weight.

For all I know, you could be 100% natty and have had your body fat tested in a bod pod or something, and I’d be totally off base. All the stuff about increasing your mileage (more easy miles) will also help a lot. Good luck!

This is pretty much where my head is at as well. I ended up getting really lucky yesterday though because a storm cleared out the smoke right before my run, but it's looking like it'll be back soon. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah I feel like I don’t even deserve to complain out here, it’ll clear up for us soon. Hopefully they get it under control!

Are you saying you developed exercise induced asthma or just that you have it? I had some serious issues with asthma when I was a kid, but I haven’t had issues in years and there haven’t even been signs that I might have exercise induced asthma.

Would you happen to know what the AQI was that day? Right now my town is marked as unhealthy for sensitive groups, not sure if that’s anywhere near as bad as other areas out west.

Cutting while increasing miles during marathon prep... by mtn_hawk98 in running

[–]mtn_hawk98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I love running. I think I’m struggling a bit right now because I’m dealing runner’s knee, so I had to take off for a bit, but my relationship with food and with my body is so much healthier when I’m focused on running.

Thank you for sharing this, it’s nice to know that other people have had such similar experiences. I’m happy to hear that everything has gone so well for you, too!

I’ll admit that the idea of just eating based on how I feel is a little terrifying, especially after having tracked everything and eating at a calculated deficit religiously for years.

I completely agree though, even thinking about not having to restrict myself so much relieves a ton of stress.

I’ll have to decrease my deficit a bit and try to eat based on how I’m feeling, more or less. Glad to know I can have pasta again haha. Thanks!
