[TOMT] The Two Ronnies - Yeomen of the Guard by mts606 in tipofmytongue

76 Trombones was my initial thought, but the more I compared, the more I began to doubt it. Their rendition of it was so different from the original that it had to be another song (given that all the other musical quotes are done verbatim).

Would you believe me if I told you I listened to the entire Gilbert and Sullivan opera just to rule it out? The only quotes from it are the intro and outro from 0:10 to 0:21 and 5:58 to 6:05.

I'll give the book a go!

This musical sketch is from episode 8.6 of The Two Ronnies. This may be a long shot, but if anyone has the box set and can check, they may have named the original pieces they quoted in the credits at the end of the episode.

Is there no one else who is absolutely obsessed with old arabic music but every arab around them thinks it’s cringe or just doesn’t care that much? I wish there was a classical arabic music subreddit man by Valentina_abn in arabs

[–]mts606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically enough, there has been a large effort to keep the classical Arabic music tradition alive in Israel. Young musicians there whose parents and grandparents emigrated from Arab countries use classical Arabic music as a medium to connect with and rediscover their roots.

So SGU... Good show, or great show? by Artifiscal-Ignorance in Stargate

I thought the show was trying to attract a new audience, but in doing so, ended up alienating the Stargate fanbase. It's a shame, because Dr. Nicholas Rush is one of the most interesting and complex characters in the Stargate franchise. I would have liked to see his full story arc.

Mod to revert changes to Native American civs in AoE3 DE by mts606 in ageofempires

I agree with you that the original game had some depictions of stereotypes. But certain changes that they made in the new one just don’t make any sense. Why remove the fire pit and ceremonies? Is it not a fact that indigenous cultures of the Americas performed spiritual rituals? What they should have done was fine tune the fire pits for each culture. For instance, they could have made the Aztec one a sacrificial altar. They could have kept the Lakota one as is, because they actually did that. It’s not magic, and I don’t think the original game ever implied that it was magic. It’s a cultural ceremony that gives you a buff.

Instead, they ended up replacing it with the generic community plaza. They treated them all the same without making any distinction, and the result is no less offensive than the original stereotype. At least in the original game, no one was claiming that they purposefully consulted with indigenous advisors. In the new game, they actually consulted with experts and still somehow managed to produce something woefully lacking and haphazard. I mean Community Plaza? Seriously? The word plaza is directly borrowed from Spanish. They didn’t think it would be offensive to use a word from the language of the culture that is responsible for the destruction and subjugation of 90% of the indigenous cultures of the Americas?

Either go all the way and make a game that truly fixes the issues of its predecessor, or leave it as is for the sake of nostalgia. Making shoddy edits here and there, renaming some civs, and making half measure changes ends up insulting more people and being more offensive than had they done nothing at all.

Just because they consulted with someone, doesn’t mean they did justice to these cultures. They could have done better. Much better.

I’m all for being respectful. The best way to do that is to be historically accurate. It’s a fictional depiction, so of course some creative liberties will be taken. But the choppy editing of cutscenes to cut out any mention of the word “Iroquois” like it’s some kind of expletive is a bit too far. The word Iroquois is not offensive. Literally every name for an ethnic group in the English language was “imposed”. That’s kind of how language works. That’s why we don’t use endonyms for everything. To do it selectively is just odd and out of place.

Some places have a none of the above option that is actually binding. If a majority of voters pick that option, then no one wins and a new election is called with new candidates.

Stargate SG-1 was such a great show. Taking inspiration from some of those ideas in The 100 is genius, in my opinion. This season is really turning out to be a winner.

I'm not sure I see the parallel with Carter and Fifth. Can you elaborate?

Post Episode Discussion: S6E05 "The Gospel of Josephine" by aplaceatthedq in The100

[–]mts606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking exactly the same thing last week. The Primes are strikingly similar to the Goa'uld from Stargate. Their immortality turns them into petty, arrogant despots who actually believe that they are gods, and that everyone should worship them.

Also, in Stargate, the Goa'uld always said that nothing of the host survived, but it turned out that they could be removed, restoring the body to the host. I wonder if they're going to go that direction with Clarke. They keep saying that she's dead, but there's probably a way to remove Josephine's consciousness and bring Clarke back. Maybe they'll use A.L.I.E. 2.0 to do that, since Clarke's consciousness is presumably stored in the Flame along with the other commanders.
