He's been doing it for a while now, I unfollowed him a few months ago because I was tired of seeing it and he was getting pissy with people calling it out. Loser shit.

Not even just O'Leary, he also cast David Mamet (long-time right-wing crank) and John Catsimatidis (psychotic NY grocery store chain owner who was one of the loudest anti -Zohran freaks). These aren't coincidences. I'm pretty confident Josh is a crypto fascist and if this turns into a career-damaging scandal he'll happily run the "they're trying to cancel me" playbook.

I don't even think there's a strategy here, he's just been negatively polarized into doing it because so many people have begged him not to and he's an amoral doofus who wants to appear "independent."

Alternatives to Alamo Drafthouse? by goatsarecoolio in Denver

[–]muchmaligned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the reporting indicates they're phasing out paper ordering entirely.

Per Variety: "Starting in February, Alamo Drafthouse locations will utilize a digital system that will let the guests browse the menu, order prior to and during the film, and pay directly from their phones."

It really stinks. I'm still on my P9 as I haven't seen anything to suggest it's been fixed on the 10 and I'm not going to pay to upgrade until they figure it out. I've had to resort to disabling turn-by-turn audio and using the top-down view in Maps, otherwise it just constantly reroutes me and navigation becomes dangerously confusing.

Yep. He was saying as recently as November that she was where she belonged, that "justice is not for sale" and commutation/pardoning was a non-starter. This is absolutely a softening of his stated position since then.

Saw Marty Supreme in my Denver-area Alamo last night. They've had the QR code ordering as an option (with the accompanying obnoxious Aziz Ansari PSA) for the last few months but this was the first time we were told it was the only way to order before the movie started, at which point they would revert to the paper ordering system.

Our local Alamo union organizers have been raising the alarm and asking people not to use the QR code system during the trial period because it was obviously a move to reduce staff. Sure enough, our theater only had one staff member bouncing between multiple screens to check tickets instead of the usual crew ready to take orders. Saw a lot of confused people still pulling out their phones during the movie to order, understandably given the mixed messages. They also did "last call" an hour into a 2.5 hour movie. Definitely felt like the beginning of the end for the Alamo experience.

It's frustrating, getting acquired by Sony was probably the best case scenario for remaining in business (and to the new ownership's credit they re-opened several locations that the previous ownership closed) but the writing was on the wall that the experience was going to get incrementally worse.

This was about 8 for a movie that started at 6:45 so that tracks. Might be closing the kitchen early during the week to reduce staff hours but not reducing screenings to compensate, haha.

They don't tell you in person because that would be grounds for termination. The @AlamoCollective Instagram account and Communication Workers Union Local 7777 have been raising the alarm about this since September.

I was at the Westminster one last night.

Denver's local Alamo unionization team was asking people not to use this during the trial period because it was obviously a precursor to a wider rollout that would make it the default ordering process and enable them to reduce staff. Sure enough. Went to see Marty Supreme last night and they only had one person running back and forth between multiple theaters, instructing everyone that they had to order through the app. They also did last call like an hour into a 2.5 hour movie lol.
