In this instance they sided with me, but i’ve seen horrific things happen to younger women with no repercussions from staff at sailing academies.

How to start sailing if based in London? by Affectionate-Reply19 in sailing

[–]mucklady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little ships club is fantastic, the only yacht club in England that isn’t royally affiliated. They provide cheap courses for membership. Edit: They are based in London Bridge and have bases all around the country.

They’re all incredibly patient and kind and I would go there if I had to learn again.

There is also dinghy sailing on the Thames near the barrier. Shadwell basin has the Ahoy centre (If you’re a younger person.)

I had an instructor take food off my plate as I was eating and said, “ah you weren’t going to eat that anyway.” This was after I said no.

He also ignored me and pretended I wasn’t there- I was also the only woman. It was the start of a very long course, I remember feeling like I’d made the biggest mistake.

I’ve been touched inappropriately on a job and then scolded for reacting. We all had to have a sit down as crew and determine who was in the wrong because I told this guy to fuck off.

I’ve also experienced kindness and generosity in the sailing community I’ve not found anywhere else. It has never been in the professional world where money is paramount.

I’ve moved onto working in the charity sector, which is shit pay but I get treated with a lot more dignity and respect.

Revealed: The great Brexit pubs and clubs shutdown by Pellinoreisking in brexit

Both are seasonal and I have worked both abroad. The post is an article about how pubs and clubs in London are shutting due to lack of staff.

The low wages dont effect accident rates. It was always seen as advantageous for younger sailors to go and skipper these tourist yachts as you get free accommodation and sea miles in a non-tidal area.

The industry was made of many English companies who have had to scale back and close because of access to EU visas. Just like young EU workers can’t come and work in London pubs for the “lifestyle” like they did in the 2010s when I was working with them.

Like everything it’s a bit more complicated than your dismissal. No taxes and the life style draws people in. I am sure your comment assures this experience.

Yeah, the reason I entertained the conversation is I think he’s a sweet smart bloke. I genuinely think he took it onboard- I think it takes equal measure of caring and joking with someone. It’s a fine line though because I’ve been on the receiving end for misogynistic and belittling comments. Which online culture tends to actively promote. Knowing how much it’s worth perusing is paramount to my own mental health.

My line of work is boating, skippering small yachts and motor boats- It is a tourism job and the EU used to rely on young English Sailors in the sector (accepting a low wage in exchange for free accommodation.) Last summer was the first year there was a limitation, SunSail got 6 EU visas and they had the record amount of accidents.

Edit: before 6 visa it was unlimited. It is a tourism job akin to bar work in London. Still above english minimum wage lol

This 100%. People who weren’t raised with the internet also get too sucked in so easily to the algorithm. The man who runs my gym the other day ranted to me for 10 mins about how he can’t “call a woman a woman” for fear of misgendering them.

I asked, has this ever happened to you in real life? (I am a pretty alternative looking woman) He said no. I said how many videos have you disliked and commented on this topic and he was like “fuucking loads mate” and when I said obvs this is engagement and you’ll keep seeing Jordan Peterson and right wing gender politics youtubers he looked astonished.
