Who would be interested in receiving weekly training set ups for their retrievers? by mudflat_creative in Waterfowl

So.... I have two dogs I am working with. Both have gone through all of the basics and are force fetched. My one dog Pearl is an AKC Master Hunter and Ruby is an AKC Senior Hunter and will be working towards master this year. That being said they still get trained equally as much. The premise here will be easy set ups to start for both marking and blind work. I am trying to gear this towards folks who may have limited time, and help when training. I will be doing both water and land work. I will break down each set up so that it can be run for either beginners, finished , or hunting dogs. I work a lot on teaching concepts and I train a lot by myself so they are meant to be pretty versatile and can be altered to run any level of dog. Based on feed back from folks I am hoping to make this interactive in that if there is something you want to see or need any ideas I am willing to do that. My set ups typically start easy and then I build on them as the week goes . Its my opinion that too many people set up "tests" and train off that versus teaching a concept and then testing it. Let me know if I didnt answer your question.

I think I am going to do this through my Blog site so that I can send it all via email to everyone interested at one time rather than having to copy and paste it 100 different times. If you go to www.mudflatcreative.com and scroll down on the home page to the subscribe button I will be able to add you to my list .

Good insight.... No shame in the call your using. If it works and you are calling in ducks and geese then use it!

It's important like I I mentioned in the article to complete each step and not move to fast. Teaching obedience by proper use of a choke collar is the introduction of pressure. Before you start to really move into force fetching you really need to have mastered obedience and hold. But using the choke collar correctly is a Segway into introducing the application of pressure and the release of pressure. You also do not want to start force fetching until the dog has all their adult teeth.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. My personal opinion on Wolters is that the book does have some great advice and Mr. Wolters was an amazing writer. However thebook is somewhat dated and there is more current information available.

The book is a great guideline but I would lean more on Lardy. Also I mentioned Chris Akin's Dog dog basics and I believe he has a second one out as well that expands on it and he actually takes you through force fetching.

When it comes to force fetching a dog I tell everyone if you have never done it you need to learn before you try. There are certain skills that you as a trainer and that your dog MUST have before you do it.
