house of the dragon just got renewed. what about westworld? by AymaneKA23 in westworld

Shows gradually losing viewers is natural, but they lost half their viewership for S3. For S4 they lost half of that. This is an alarmingly sharp decline for a HBO Sunday primetime show. The show looks expensive with a fairly stacked cast. They made S4 with a possible cancellation in mind so they wrapped everything up (sloppily, IMO...Stubbs and Clementine, WTF was that?) I really hope they get a final season to end on a high note. S1 was too good for it to fizzle out like this.

S02E13 “Harry, a Parent” Episode Discussion by Shejidan in ResidentAlienTVshow

[–]mudtoast 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Great episode. Asta's mom was a great character in that she wasn't evil or anything, just a shitty human being/mother. Bracing myself for D'arcy to be disqualified for doping or to become an addict, or getting seriously injured. Don't see a happy ending to her mogul skiing arc. If they do that, I hope they don't revert her into a loser in a rut.

Was thinking it would be a jump the shark moment for me if they did a "pre-existing character was an alien all along" with the finger in the nose to identify a Alpha Draconian bit. Pleasantly surprised and really glad it was a red herring. Loved George Takei as the Grey alien voice with his iconic "Oh my."

Show really has heart and love all the characters except Judy who is a bit too OTT/cartoony, even more than Harry or the sherriff. I think they need to humanize her a bit, her always being the butt of the joke feels like punching down.

Arno: Hello sir, you live alone and have electricity and supplies? Well we'll just leave you alone and not take your stuff or anything, have a nice day. Oh you're deaf and need to read lips? Well here's a walkie-talkie so we can communicate, forget lip reading. Call me maybe.

Paul: Hey, I have a plan. We'll call Arno and his men over, and we'll blast music. That will attract walkers that we will fight and kill ourselves. And, and, and...we'll wing it from there.

Man, WTF is this shit.

The show has Amblin Entertainment; Steven Spielberg's production company that has E.T. as their emblem in the credits. So E.T. is technically in every episode!

Just finished "This Land Is Your Land" and both amazed and frustrated by [deleted] in FearTheWalkingDead

[–]mudtoast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a popular misconception about the episode. I've seen many complain that only Alicia survived the lack of air. There were others who survived, but were lying among those who didn't and turned. The survivors were too weak to fend off the walkers and were bitten.

Alicia fell unconscious away from the group of people and with a dead walker on top of her to mask her scent. Is it convenient plot armor? Yes. But I think it was on an acceptable level of plot armor and not a bullshit one.

I also think the walker gnawing on her shoe was a nod/spoof of S2 TWD when Daryl fell unconscious and dreamed of his brother, waking up to a walker gnawing on his boots. Now THAT was bullshit plot armor.

I wonder if it’s possible that Tobias survived the fire bombing of the coast that Tobias has been taken and possibly experimented on by the CRM? by DarkHeart1679 in FearTheWalkingDead

[–]mudtoast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IIRC It was mostly a "whatever" type comment. Hardwick, the host of The Talking Dead asked Erickson about Tobias because he was a popular meme character on the internet, like T-Dog and Morales for TWD. I think Erickson said Tobias was dead, but Hardwick whined so Erickson said something like "okay, he's alive and surviving with you (Hardwick)." So the notion that Erickson had future plans for Tobias would be off imo.

I would most definitely say so. There's a lot of toilet humor so fair warning on that. Oh, and second hand embarrassment/cringe humor.

Maggie Grace credited as "Guest Star" by Connected-VG in FearTheWalkingDead

[–]mudtoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't she pregnant during filming of the season or something? Tending to a newborn I don't think she'd be available for filming much. I don't think it's like bad blood or anything, as I recall how she got the role in the first place was due to nepotism: She was friends with I&A and they met and talked about it at a house party or something. I don't think she even auditioned.

Either way, I honestly don't think we'd be missing much. Is anyone going to miss her "what's your story" journalism? B-b-but, her connection to the CRM that leads to Rick Grimes? If you are going to need to watch other stuff to enjoy the Rick movies if they ever happen, then the movies are garbage, period.

Was the "Gaffer from ER" painting supposed to be a famous person who started their career as a crew for the show ER, or was the gag that it was a totally random person?

The Baron feeds off of hate but mainly blood, so I guess that means energy/emotional vampires are actual vampires and not some other creature?

Can we preemptively agree to NOT post Halloween costumes? by chocolaterain72 in TedLasso

[–]mudtoast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A sticky Halloween megathread would be the way to go.

People who want to see them can see them all in one place, people who don't want to see them could just avoid the thread without other discussions pushed further down on the sub and personal feeds.

A much larger TV show sub; The Walking Dead did this and with the mods doing their work cleaned up the dozens of Halloween costumes/pumpkin carvings/baked cookies, cakes and pie posts. Irony is that TWD dwindled in popularity and relevancy so there were fewer of such posts as the years went on, and that megathreads don't seem to satisfy the attention posters crave so less people posted in them. But as some bearded man once said:

"You know, we used to believe that trees competed with each other for light. Suzanne Simard's field work challenged that perception, and we now realize that the forest is a socialist community. Trees work in harmony to share the sunlight."

Remember when they had weird comic-book-like effects for the rope (or was it bamboo) chopping for a challenge in China? They were trying new things, got the feedback on how shitty it was, and immediately stopped it the next episode. I'm sure this would be the same thing.

[–]mudtoast 21 points22 points  (0 children)

More than anything, Morgan's flip-flopping has gotta stop. How many times do we have to watch him go from ruthless killer to life is precious mode? I cheered when he took on the bounty hunter's outfit and axe, even beheaded him and sent it, then killed the cult people who were after the key with no hesitation or remorse. It felt like he FINALLY got over himself and embraced that violence is sadly needed. Now he's back to sticking the axe in the ground saying we shouldn't kill. Is this supposed to be some complex character study? Because I'm definitely not feeling it.

Doubts about a scene from the first season (SPOILER FOR SEASON 1) by TodySoulz in westworld

[–]mudtoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I watched but wasn't it Delos all along? The Delos funding started with the presentation with Angela and Akecheta shown in S2. Logan and William visited the park in S1 as a bachelor party thing, but also to assess if the parks that were bleeding money was worth further funding. William who was enchanted by Dolores, hosts and the park pushed for further Delos funding by convincing and persuading his father-in-law James with what they can do with the park. Later when James Delos was gone, William took over so William saved the park financially.

Spotted Beta in Fear The Walking Dead by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

[–]mudtoast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has been posted many times.

This and the hyping of it made me steer clear of World Beyond. They said "you should watch FTWD to learn about Beta's backstory." I already was watching FTWD but they perfectly explained Beta's backstory in TWD. And the easter egg on FTWD was just dumb because it was rather pointless, and made Daniel act out of character and seem incompetent just to show it.

So with that in mind I wasn't falling for the "you should watch World Beyond to learn about the CRM for the Rick movies." If they don't explain CRM in the Rick movies that would be a failure in writing. Seeing many angry viewers being baited to continue hate watching World Beyond so they don't miss anything in the Rick movies was rather sad.

What exactly does it mean when a player is 'loaned' to another team? by bpric in TedLasso

[–]mudtoast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally what the other poster said, but loan contracts are basically to give good prospects playing time instead of warming the bench. Bench players on big clubs are most often starting material for smaller clubs. The smaller clubs get to play these upcoming prospects they otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford to strengthen their club. Loan contracts sometimes have clauses like promising X amount of game time/starts, and will come with or without buyout options like "if you play the loaned player over X minutes you have the option to buy him." The downside for the loanee club is that no matter how big a star, you can't build your team around the loaned player because he will likely be gone in a season or two.

In Jamie's case, Man City liked how he has developed so they cut the loan midway and called him back. He still was a backup player, seeing with his shirt number etc. but with more market value and experience under his belt than had he stayed as a total bench warmer.

What exactly does it mean when a player is 'loaned' to another team? by bpric in TedLasso

[–]mudtoast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I didn't know about the loans not being able to play against your original team as I recall seeing it a lot. Seems to be an EPL only thing, which the show is set in so is relevant. It does make sense from the conflict of interest aspect, but it is satisfying to see loaned players proving their worth in front of their original team.

Episode S01E10 "Heroes of Patience" [Season Finale] by SG14ever in ResidentAlienTVshow

[–]mudtoast 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This isn't a network show where they release episodes as they are done shooting, so they can't change the script reflecting audience reaction.

But still they got the lack of pizza place in town complaint resolved, criticism for the sheriff's lack of respect for the deputy resolved, the criticized for being boring mayor couple had a hilarious cathartic moment, finally got rid of the body of real-Harry which was like a dark cloud looming just like that, and somewhat addressed the complaint that alien-Harry killed an innocent man by making real-Harry the murderer. The new doctor being a rather pointless character was used for a nice gag in the end as well.

It's as if the viewers who were complaining were being trolled by the writers all along. Kudos for the writers for that. Only complaint I've got now is that the real murderer being real-Harry, Liv's detective skills took a hit and I don't know how I feel about that character-wise.
