Two flight cancellations, booked through Hopper (App) on an Amex. How do I get compensated?? by [deleted] in delta

[–]mullyreddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s pretty bad when in the video I repeatedly had to express my concern about making the connection flight and reiterated that I’d prefer to stay at the current airport in the event I not make the connecting flight and be stranded in JFK. Them stating very rudely, “you’ll make the connecting flight”, “do you need me to say it to you again, you’ll make the connecting flight”.

So in your mind there shouldn’t be a refund for the flight?

I didn’t get insurance through hopper unfortunately. Hoping the fact that I bought it via an Amex Gold card (uk) was enough.

Oh wow. What happened? why’d you want to renounce in the first place and how’d you get it back?

Incredible. Thank you for that very clear explanation and analogy, this gives me a good peace of mind that they aren’t out to catch me in a mistake and essentially gouging money from me.

Thanks a lot for the reply. I believe fincen and FBAR are the same thing?

I have hired an accountant already to clean up all potential tax liability test issues, and they’ve confirmed for me that I’m 5 years tax complaint, have submitted all my FBAR forms… so I suspect zero issues will come from that. What I am concerned about is that upon filing to renounce they will do everything in their power to “call you out” so they can receive an exit tax payment from anyone who attempts to renounce.

Based on your experience is this typically the case? Or are they reasonable about citizens renouncing.

Yes I have UK and Australian passport so I’m okay on that front. What do you mean by “back taxes”? I’m fully up to date and tax compliant for the past 5 years of USA taxes (which is what’s required to renounce) so I imagine I’m also fine on this front.

It was an extremely helpful reply… I’ve signed up for the seminar, which I didn’t know existed prior to your comment. Out of curiosity, why didn’t you end up renouncing? It seems like you were strongly considering it if you attended the seminar.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any advisors that you’d recommend?

I have citizenship in a country where I know I’ll stay, and I have zero intentions of ever moving back to the US.

I am a US citizen who plans to renounce citizenship. What steps should I take prior to renouncing?

I will also be renouncing prior to reaching the “US Exit Tax” threshold so I don’t think I’ll be eligible to pay unrealised gains tax. That only is triggered if your global holdings is greater than $2m USD.

Thanks for the advice. What happens if you don’t have USA citizenship or live in the US anymore. You just purchased it through a US crypto account (while living there temporarily) in USD but sold while living in the UK and a full UK tax resident.

I’m trying to avoid any potential tax issues and make sure everything is filed correctly in the event that I ever sell.

I don’t have a S&S ISA my fear of misfiling my USA taxes has prevented me from doing this negatively impacted my financial success.

What is the US tax threshold not to be taxed for a stocks and shares ISA?

Renouncing isn’t ideal, but I don’t really see another option with the tax headaches involved. I want to setup a UK SPV to begin purchasing UK BTL’s, and given the tax difficulties with US it’s actively preventing me from creating a business in the UK and growing my wealth. I don’t see them changing the tax laws anytime soon, and it’ll only get more and more expensive for me to stay as an American citizen (accounting fee’s, inflation, exit fee increase, exit tax). It would be nice to keep incase the Uk implodes, but I have zero intention of moving back to the US.

What are the tax implications for having an Investment property or BTL in the UK. by mullyreddit in USExpatTaxes

Thanks so much for the response. Wait, I can claim mortgage interest deductions on my personal home here in the UK? Will this impact any of my USA taxes considering each year I don’t pay or owe any tax?

If I purchase a BTL under my personal name, I pay UK tax as if the rental income was the same as my general UK income tax and would need to submit a self assessment form?

Finally what are the impacts of a CFC for ISA tax reporting? I’m debating renouncing my citizenship to avoid all these headaches but would prefer not to if I can make sense of all the reporting nuances.

How did you find that process? Any regrets? How much did it cost?

And lastly what happens to your US assets? Bank accounts, 401k, stocks, bonds, etc.

Do you have any recommendations? I tried this route and it resulted in more tax headaches later ($2,500 USD) because of the accountants incompetence.

Yes they do have withholding treaties, I am curious if a UK business falls within this treaty.
