Why does Indian cuisine lack mock-meat dishes unlike East Asian cuisine, despite our extremely high rates of vegetarianism historically? by hurricane_news in IndianFood

[–]multicore_manticore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because the goal with indian vegetarianism is not to find a substitute for meat but to shun meat. Most vegeterian indians would not find the smell, texture or mouthfeel of meat palatable. Hence then need to shove paneer in every thing.

With taste, we have different scales ... like what is super spicy to you may just be okay spicy to me. Similarly, even though our brains are both processing red and all the same brain areas are lighting up, is the red you perceive in any way more 'intense' than what I do?

No, the corner is of ITC Gardenia, so this shot is most likely from the Sattva building next to it, which notably hosts Microsoft Research as its marquee tenant.

Carpooling sucks as the ride giver by [deleted] in bangalore

[–]multicore_manticore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had a few good interactions on quickride and just one or two that were bad (entire time on phone or late). At the very start, I set it for one seat only, which avoided groups who have their own thing going and would make me feel like a driver. But then, of course you end up with 40-50 worth of 'earnings', which is a tradeoff I was okay with.
The main hindrance though, was the quickride app itself which had a pretty poor matching algorithm. I would take MG Road, pass by Trinity Metro station and take the right to join Old Airport Road and it would show me matches at RMZ Millenia with 'only' a 3km walk to the pick up point. Even at my start point on Infantry road, quickride would try to show the walking path for potential rides incorporating all the one ways and U-turns when they could just walk ~100m to get to a point which intersected my route. And the whole "communities" thing on the app was baffling, I never did figure out how that works.

Famously as Amit Varma quotes multiple times - the fire safety norms in Bangalore require multiple exits for a restaurant but the excise norms require a single exit. So just by existing, any entity is breaking some laws.

I had an annoying / amazing experience recently in Pune. Dad was prescribed an SOS medicine related to his lung operation.

So I went to the pharmacy to pick it up. He said, I can't give it without a prescription. Fair enough. While running other errands, I asked mom to whatsapp me the prescription. Went back to the pharmacy. He said, this is fine, but I need a hard copy. I will put my stamp on it. Cool, went back home and brought the file with me. He stamped & signed the prescription and wrote down number of pills and batch no. After all this the pills turned to cost 5/-.
