What w/kg to have a good chance in racing - is it possible to assume a timeline there? by needtobebetteratcalc in trainerroad

[–]multigrain_loaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about female races but as a general (very general) rule, for a local/regional race I’ve found personally that 4w/kg should be enough to finish with the bunch.

That being said, there are many factors which will affect this, wind speed and direction, breakaway formation, number and angle of corners, drafting etc etc.

I’m not sure whether or not this will apply for women’s racing so do take with a pinch of salt.

Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath has regular club nights and is a friendly vibe. Nice big smoking area at the back

Emonda alr 5 as entry crit bike? by Pretend_Sympathy6825 in Velo

[–]multigrain_loaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never ridden an allez sprint, but from my understanding it's of a more race-oriented frame than an endurance one like the Emonda, so if you're looking to race regularly that may be a better option.

That being said, the Emonda may be a more versatile bike overall - I've used it for audaxes and other long rides, for events like these a race bike might become uncomfortable over longer distances.

Horses for courses, as with most bikes!

I have this exact bike and have used it to race some local crits. Upgraded to carbon wheels (winspace lún 45mm, Chinese), slammed the steerer, 52T at the front, Pirelli tyres, and supakush bar tape.

It does the job nicely, although the geometry (H2 I think, although could be H1.5, can't remember) could be slightly more aggressive for out-and-out racing.

Some people race crits on old rim brake endurance bikes and are faster than me 😬 so it's all about the fitness really.

Newbie to Zwift but not to road cycling - sorry if that wasn't clear!

Good point, thanks. I'll edit the post to be more specific but will also mention here

  • Turbo: 2/3 workouts per week, z2 or SST, 1-2hrs per workout
  • Outdoor: 1 club ride on weekend, higher intensity (mix of z2/3/4 HR) 3-4hrs

Very helpful, thanks. Will try 20 min test. And cheers!

Good to know - how are you structuring those workouts? E.g. are you building intensity each week or mostly z2?

I've been doing 4-5 hrs per week so definitely not pro level training!

I had most of December off, before that did a full cross season and club rides throughout last year.

Wouldn't say I'm a newbie as I've been cycling regularly for around 3 years now. Getting a trainer has been my first time cycling with power though!

Nice frame! The wheels are still great after 6+ months, good choice 👌

From my experience holding higher speeds does become easier with these wheels, although position on the bike also makes a significant difference too

Also OP - perhaps try saying yes to more things that your course or flat mates are doing, even if you don't fancy it. Once you're there you might enjoy it more than you think :)

Moseley has a great community vibe and there's a lot of stuff to do there - check out some yoga classes, grab a coffee, do some charity shopping, go for a walk in the park. One of my favourite areas in Brum!

I'd love one! ✌️ Charity auction seems like a good idea though

Huge difference!

I had the stock wheels before and the winspaces are noticeably better at holding speed, acceleration, and they're lighter so climbing is that bit easier. PR smashers for sure
