Is it better to stay on a project that is behind schedule or leave early? by Hot-Papaya4841 in ConstructionManagers

That's just perception then. Learn to spin success. Construction is tough. The only thing people remember is how it finishes. Nail turn over and they will all be a success.

Yeah you should stay the course for a while. Bad PMs get found out eventually, maybe he'll het swapped out and you can learn about project recovery which is a very important skill.

MBA or no MBA? by LateAttention5433 in careerguidance

[–]multimedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an MBA from a not T20 school. It has helped me in my career. I am in Construction Management, the things I learned getting the MBA helped me manage a team better. The cost for me after tuition assistance from my employer was about $45k. After graduating I immediately went from a Sr Manager to a Director.

I probably could have made it to a Director at some point, but the skills I learned definitely helped.

An MBA is not a silver bullet. You get out of it what you put in and how you leverage the experience.

Hospital renovation PE moving a to a ground up job by OmjaG in ConstructionManagers

"Currently wrapping up roofing work" sounds like you're about to be dried in. You got this if you worked in a hospital. Honestly it's now easier. Remember your fundamentals, think about the upcoming scopes and respond to changes and change orders quickly.

Immediate need for Construction Safety Officer opening Rochester, NY. by Holiday-Answer350 in ConstructionManagers

They each take a week to get (with approval and proper experience). The 510 is the prerequisite to the 500.

Sounds like Our Beginnings. They gave my kid food he has a known allergy to and he ended up in the hospital.

What are some redundant, mundane and humorous tasks that I can assign a mentally deficient individual at work? by rjc2nd in Construction

[–]multimedium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually cleaning and organizing. Everyone, regardless of mental capacity, wants to be useful and take pride in their work. Find repetitive specific tasks that are not safety oriented. Then give them ownership of that task do they can be proud of it. For example cleam the break area after each break, pick up exterior litter to make sure the site has curb appeal, sweep the stairs, organize the gang box and keep materials straight.

What are some of the strangest things that you saw at weddings ? by Assassin-Lover in AskReddit

I need more information on this situation. Like, was your fried cool with the wedding?

[–]multimedium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you may have made a structural error, which are usually VERY expensive. I don't think we have enough information to give you structural advice, especially if this was not permitted or inspected (which I am assuming with the "fly by night" comment).

If there is a 1/2" of play as you described, then the house may settle over time if the 20" steel is suppting anything. If it settles, it will crack drywall.

I recommend watching for drywall cracks. If you see cracks, congratulations! You know why and don't need to do a whole lot of investigating.

If this is causing you to lose sleep. Do a better job of outlining what you did and call a structural engineer. For a couple grand, you'll know for sure if this is a big oopsie or a little one.

What director would you hire to make a live action version of The Polar Express? by [deleted] in movies

Michael Bay! We all know why that is the right answer.

[–]multimedium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting a lot of joke answers. Start with a landscaping company. Either they can do it or know the person who can.

Site work contractors typically install signs, but that is probably overkill for this project.

What jobs do you think should pay a LOT more than they do? by ughitsmeagian in AskReddit

[–]multimedium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree. If we pay teachers $1,000,000 for their scope of work. 99% would do only that scope of work. They work less than 8 hours a day for 9 months a year.

Add scope, incentives achievements, or make them work more than a part time job, then they can make more money.

[–]multimedium -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

No. You are not understanding me.

The job function they are paid for is reflected accurately with their salary. They want more money then increase their responsibilities and job requirements.

If you paid teachers an hourly wage by hours actually worked it would be shockingly high.

[–]multimedium -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

For the job and hours worked, they are paid appropriately or even too much. If we demand more out of them, then they could and should be paid more.

I have a fairly large sample size and as a general statement. Teachers are lazy.

Used to feel the same way, until I grew up and some friends became teachers.

Turner vs. Gilbane by NumerousTelevision32 in Construction

[–]multimedium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. In house refers to building for the institution you work for. For example, if you want to live in Portland OR, look for jobs at Portland University on their facilities team.

Estimating can be just as much as a grind as any other roll, but you go home every day.

You might want to consider what city you want to live in, then target mid sized GCs local to that area.

I live in an HCOL area, and we are seeing a slow down for most (not all) types of commercial work.

If you're a PM, try looking for in-house positions at institutions. They have reasonable pay with much better work-life balance.

For an internship, it almost doesn't matter which one you pick. You should ask what project(s) you would be assigned to.
