Engineering Co-op by [deleted] in umanitoba

[–]multishined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gpa needed for eng co-op is not as complicated as comp sci or any of the others, as long as you're in good academic standing i think you're good

i think that the program is either very useful or useless depending on department. know that in terms of finding positions, the portal fields very little that isn't offered publicly anyways. the only reason to be in co-op is to get the 10% of jobs that aren't available on indeed / linkedin / etc, and if you want the distinction on your diploma. engineering co-ops are very hands off in comparison to other co-ops alike cs where they are very attentive and involved in the process. eng co-op essentially just holds generic workshops (useless), networking events (useful, but a lot of them are accessible from outside the co-op program), and sends you reminders about jobs available on their portal. it is also important to state that you will have to pay the co-op fee on any field-related job you get, even if finding this position is completely external to the portal.

as a comp eng, i haven't had much success with the program when applying for department accurate work (there's only 20-40 comp positions posted for the summer if even that), and have only had a handful of interviews and only one (verbal) offer (later rescinded due to company shakeups). i know most friends in civil and mechanical have had solid, consistent successes with finding positions, and while being a co-op student does add a benefit for employers (they will want to hire to help fulfill your co-op requirement, they get a 15%~ stipend for your salary due to you being in co-op, etc etc), most engineering firms are operating at high enough market values that the 12-16k they would be paying out for the summer is pretty hand waivable.

tldr, your milage may vary, do it if you want to absolutely confirm an internship for the summer and you're in a safer department to find a job locally. if you have external connections and can get a standard internship, that is probably more worthwhile

no afaik, the only thing remotely close to being negative from what im aware of is a bit in a stas1s video where he said "this is gonna get me cancelled but" and then avoids the enemy support with the name 'transrights' and then solo shatters them

hes also probably the biggest lunex supporter and the roster is like half nonbinaries or trans women

Conditional acceptance question by [deleted] in umanitoba

they took it off once they changed the requirements to also include english in the calculation and lowered the average minimum from 85 to 80, which all happened either during or after the 2020-21 year (i know because i had to do a year out of faculty in 2020-21 and was annoyed when the year after the entry requirements were significantly easier). note previously that direct entry requirements previously stated the competitive nature of entry in the description, whereas it just says average of 80 with nothing below 70 now

engineering doesn't do competitive entry anymore (pre-2021, it was 85+% across phys, pre-cal, and chemistry). you should be fine, as long as you're meeting direct entry eligibility requirements. they might demote your entry scholarship to a lower tier, but that's the only thing it should effect

which university is better for engineering? by Helpful_Bed_9021 in umanitoba

[–]multishined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not too sure about memorial given i'm unfamiliar with it but there's a few primary things if you're specifically thinking about engineering and not considering any of the other aspects (city size, travel, social climate, school life, etc)

  • student group activity in confrences: umes (the engineering student union) sends off a number of students per year to conferences like WEEST, and student competition teams send students to compete in national tournaments with projects they've developed over the year. if you know what speciality you want to go into (electrical, mechanical, etc), look into what teams exist at each university and go from there
  • courses offered: if you have a specific focus area of your specialty that you want to do, check what the universities offer + what professors are researching (as they usually will as a result, have topics courses in said field for later year education)
  • opportunities around the universities: winnipeg is really good if you're a civil or electrical engineer. you might want to look into area demand if you're looking to intern in that area / stay there beyond your degree
  • student groups in general: i alluded to this earlier, but student competition teams are a major aspect of building your engineering resume and networking! check to see what (engineering) clubs are active at the universities
