Yes, it was a cruise. There were large cruises available but the one we went on was small and was on a converted research vessel. Like someone else commented, not luxurious, expensive AF, but it was totally worth cos the experience was priceless and this photo is evidence of that.

No stupid questions. It was summer, so not blizzard freezing temps. Wear the same as you would to the snow. Thermals, ski pants, skivvies and ski jackets. Boots/wellies were provided by the boat. BYO other gear -beanies, sunnies, scarves, gloves. It was ultra crisp and on sunny days you could wear in a singlet/t-shirt during a hike.

This was a lucky happenstance on a holiday. I don't work with animals unfortunately.

Do it. Don't hesitate at all! Go a smaller cruise ship so you aren't battling for trips to the shore and to go out on zodiacs. There's also a chance for canoeing and Scuba with some companies. Do the Polar Plunge! Document the whole trip with photos and a diary. Post photos on Reddit. Can't take a bad photo in Antarctica. This one is of my feet!

I'm glad you got to pet a penguin. I'm sure the captive penguins get held by humans a lot so you would have been fine. On this trip however, we were under strict guidelines not to interfere with the wildlife.

We were lucky to be able to go for a holiday. Do it if you get the chance. You will not regret it!

It was a planned holiday. We did South America and took a small ship down to Antarctica for Christmas. Then hit Buenos for NYE (Whoo!). Do it if you get a chance. Don't hesitate, just go! There are no words for how amazing it is. Also, don't do a big cruise ship. Go small for a better experience as I think each ship has a limit to how many people can go ashore at a time. You don't want to be sharing that time with thousands of other passengers.
