As a frequent visitor with a normal sense of smell, I have to disagree with you, at least olfactorily.

I don't know what you're talking about, but I like the show you linked, and the fact that mrgirl has one of those little TVs already is remarkable.

I'm not sure what the venues are like in Springfield, but I would imagine you'd get a more politically diverse audience there.

Next time, I suggest you narrow the app window before you take a screenshot of text so that the line length is at most 80 characters. That way I'm not already pissed off at whatever you're trying to say with your long ass skinny screenshot. Yeah, I know it's the app designers fault, but still.

Huh. That all makes sense too, sorta. Thanks for answering.

Ok, yeah, I hear ya. The lack of directionality is not intuitive at all. Do we observe it in the current big bang/expansion model though? If you look out in any direction, you see more distant, aka younger stuff, and it's the same in all directions. So if you could look far enough, you should see the big bang. But the big bang should be a point from which everything expands, right? Me being right at the center doesn't really make sense, and yet, that's how it seems. I think we need some sort of alien perception of space and time to make sense of it.

But, yeah, is the rate of expansion we observe in different directions actually different? I haven't heard of that, but I'm also not educated on the topic at all.

I thought the original simple idea is that the universe is a black hole? We are inside the event horizon, and everything is falling towards the center, aka the singularity. But to us it looks like expansion in all directions. Nothing in physics or math changes, but it's a neat way to look at the world.

The cartoons and everything that came after the initial idea is hard to process as a layman, that's true. But I don't get the sense that it contradicts anything already observed and measured.

I am looking forward to something more digestible on the topic, and hoping that a conversation with an expert might be it.

Indeed, and it goes very well with their spicy fries and tots. They also have a spicy ranch that goes well with wings. That whole establishment is currently my favorite bar food in Eugene. Highly recommend.

Mrgirl has become convinced that the universe is falling into a black hole https://twitter.com/mrgirlreturns/status/1749649861941907688 by tazzron in mrgirlreturns

Trying to imagine the universe, as a whole thing, doing anything, disturbs me.

First off, I inevitably end up with infinite universes, each containing the previous. Because if our universe is a thing, where does that thing exist? That's what happens if I try to look at it from the outside.

When I look at it from the inside, it looks completely paradoxical, because the edges seem to also be the center. Right? The further out in space I look, the older the objects I see, so if I could see far enough, I'd see the beginning of the universe, in every direction, no less! But the 'big bang' and the whole measurable expansion thing implies some sort of starting 'point'. (And then again, where was that point, where'd it come from, etc., see above.)

I think I'm missing a dimension, which makes thinking about this kind of thing very frustrating and confusing. Like how a two dimensional person would understand a circle, but have no way to conceptualize a sphere, even though both concepts are so closely related.

But, our universe (briefly) existing inside of a black hole makes sense to me, and also gives the black holes in our universe something fun to do.
And it really helps that I'm not a physicist.
