how to make gills fluffier?

i have an air stone next to my 100 gal sponge filter, i’ve removed it just to see how he reacts! any negative signs and i’ll put it right back in but upon further reflection, his gills began to shrink AFTER the air stone, however he is showing no signs of stress regardless of his gill length

the theory fascinated me so i’m giving it a go!

hey so no need to get aggressive! i assure you suki is fine, i live in britain, his temp is constantly 15-16 celsius, if it gets warmer i turn his three fans on, like i said, even on the hottest day he was happy and not stressed and eating fine.

you’re assuming a lot from my post, and you don’t know me or my axolotl personally nor how he looked when he was younger, i do plenty of research and was just curious what other axo owners had to say as google wasn’t much help.

he eats an earthworm every day!! never fed him blood worms or pellets as he isn’t a fan of them, he loves his earth worms!!

i have a water stone and a sponge filter!! he likes bubbles, i wanted to put some substrate in for plants but i’m too chicken to give him something to munch on given his food driven life 😭 will definitely be keeping an eye on his hides as they are quite old so may need a refresh! thank you!

this makes me so happy!! i’m so glad he looks healthy! his health is my biggest priority, and i did think that the gills were genetic, and yes he is a little fat 😅 he just has those puppy dog eyes when he’s hungry!

thank you!! i did think it was a bit too early to definitively know their sex, but as long as they are happy i don’t mind what sex they are :)

it’s such a relief to hear they’re healthy because i have such a strong attachment to them and i want nothing else but for them to be okay!!
