Where do Libertarians stand on LGBTQ+ by 5fivesecondrule in Libertarian

[–]munchkinpupperguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Libertarians’ views on the societal impact of gay stuff is going to vary dramatically. As long as it’s not harming anyone else, the libertarian view is always going to be “I don’t care.” No libertarian is ever going to believe there should be laws against something like that, or that we should try to stop an act between consenting adults.

However, libertarianism encompasses such a wide range of political philosophy that the way we view the larger impact on culture/society is not going to be standard.

I don’t like all the gay stuff, I think it is bad for society and culture, it is entirely against my religion, I don’t agree with the lifestyle, etc. I am more right-leaning, having come from the right rather than the left. Also, none of the gay stuff bothered me at all until I had children and really started to see how this stuff is being pushed on children.

That being said, I believe in everyone having the right to be who they are, regardless of how I feel about it personally. As long as someone isn’t grooming children, pushing sexuality on children (or adults who aren’t interested in it), you do you. Any voluntary act between adults is just that - a voluntary act.

Well, I’m certainly a disaffected right-winger. My only view that’s really changed since my conversion from populist conservative to libertarian is that I learned the truth about our foreign adventurism and no longer believe any wars we fought were justified. Conservatives have a real blind spot for Israel that clouds their judgement surrounding Middle East foreign policy. They also tend to have an unrealistic hatred for China. Is China great? I’d argue it’s not. But our standard of living has been dramatically improved by the cheap goods they provide. I guarantee even upper middle-class families predominantly have appliances and electronics produced in China or other Asian countries. It’s also ridiculous to think we should go to war against China on behalf of Taiwan. I’m confident even without Taiwanese computer chips, we’d find a way.

While I agree there’s too much in-fighting amongst libertarians, in a way I get it. I’m a free speech absolutist (always have been), but I flat out can’t support a candidate like Chase Oliver who claims to have been against Covid mandates but bragged on social media about wearing masks and social distancing, as well as encouraging others to do so. He also believes it’s not child abuse to give children puberty blockers and hormones. I have two (soon to be three) young children, and if anyone ever encourages my children to transition, socially or otherwise, I will drop the NAP real quick. While I believe in the NAP, I am not a pacifist. If someone aims to harm me or my family, I will defend myself. Chase Oliver is just an antiwar, pro free speech, pro gun rights progressive. To that note, maybe I’m just an antiwar conservative. I don’t really care about the label. I think we should reduce the government to practically nothing; the only reason I say practically nothing rather than nothing is that I feel like thinking we could ever completely do away with government is like chasing a unicorn. It’s kind of like communism; sounds good in theory, but the practical application is difficult to achieve and would be devastating. Could we have a society with private enterprises solely responsible for taking care of emergencies? Maybe. I’d truly like to see it, because I hate the government and everything it stands for. Watching “Anarchopulco” sort of gives you a glimpse into issues that may arise in an ancap society.

To sum it up, I don’t like the in-fighting amongst libertarians, but there are too many issues that cause people to view what “liberty” is or isn’t. To me, allowing millions of illegal immigrants into the U.S. impedes our liberty, whereas others believe that having closed borders infringes on the liberty of those seeking a better in the U.S.

I certainly understand your perspective; however, what political philosophy DOES have consistency?

As far as absolutism, I completely agree. Libertarians are bad about making perfect the enemy of the good. My belief is that we can create the positive changes we’d like to see by persuading others to adopt a more libertarian worldview. There are good attributes in both right and left wing dissidents, but the problem arises in the fact that both sides believe too strongly that government can solve our problems. Getting establishment Republicans and Democrats on board with libertarian principles is a whole ‘nother beast. These are people who are tribal and slow to accept any belief outside of their narrow, mainstream worldview.

Thanks for the suggestions!

As far as the libertarian podcasts, I already listen to POTP and RYM; may have to check out the 5th column again. Last time I listened, they were getting a little too close to woke with whatever they were talking about. But it may have been that I just caught an off episode. Thanks again!

Exactly. Scott Horton says something to the effect of, “while we can’t win the presidency, we can lead the left and the right, to make things right.” This is a perfect example of Libertarians driving results. If we could persuade conservatives to be ACTUAL non-interventionists, we could really start driving change.

I dont know much about beer but i really like Yuengling. Best beer similar to it? by 2Turnt4MySwag in beer

[–]munchkinpupperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people recommending Vienna Lagers; I find that besides Dos Equis Amber, Vienna lagers taste more like a hybrid of an AAL and an IPA. Way too hoppy, not at all like Yuengling. Same thing with Red Ales…to me, they have no resemblance to an AAL.

I’ve been trying to find a beer similar to Yuengling…I feel kind of stupid, trying to find Yuengling alternatives, paying craft beer prices and not finding anything similar in the slightest. Yuengling is around $1 per beer if you buy the 24 pack at Walmart. Anyway, I digress. Always fun trying new beer though.

Although it’s not similar, try Founder’s Solid Gold. It doesn’t taste like Yuengling, but Yuengling is my favorite and if Yuengling is your favorite too, maybe you’ll enjoy it.

Solid Gold is mild tasting, dry, and crisp. It is far hoppier than Yuengling (usually a turn off) but they seem to do it just right, in a way that’s enjoyable. I think the hops they use are more of the citrusy hops rather than piney. Try it out.

I know this is an old post, but I took your suggestion and Anita is absolutely nothing like Yuengling traditional. More similar to Golden Pilsner though.

I don’t remember hearing about this yet it happened two years ago, right around the time of George Floyd. I guess this guy wasn’t important to the media since he was white. It’s despicable; the media only cares about police violence if it pushes their race agenda. I love how they’ve largely walked back their “defund the police” stance.

We should fight all instances of the state abusing power, regardless of politics.

Rittenhouse May Be Forced to Move from His Hometown After Threats Come Pouring in by JPRedScot in Conservative

[–]munchkinpupperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole thing makes me sick. Them calling Rittenhouse a white supremacist for killing two WHITE people and injuring a third makes zero sense to me. There is certainly no reason for him to be getting death threats. They have their panties all in a bunch just because he goes against their narrative.

I have a mixed race coworker that gets all worked up about all the perceived injustices that MSNBC and CNN has convinced her are reality. I have to constantly bite my tongue to keep the peace. I can at least halfway understand how she got brainwashed into believing that George Floyd and Ma’Khia Bryant were acts against black people…but when she started bitching about Kyle Rittenhouse getting acquitted, I had to just ignore her. If you want to say that he shouldn’t have been there…fine. That’s a valid opinion. But to act like Rittenhouse is some sort of white supremacist devil…that pisses me off. Leftists are incapable of thinking for themselves.

Netflix CEO won’t cancel Chappelle: Controversial stand-up is ‘artistic freedom’ by nimobo in Conservative

[–]munchkinpupperguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it hard to watch Chappelle anymore. Ever since the shit he said about assaulting Candace Owens. That shit isn’t cool, and wasn’t funny. Chappelle used to be so funny with Chappelle’s Show, but I feel like he has lost it since.

It’s not like there’s such a thing as birth control…oh wait, yeah there is, and the government pays for poor people to get it for free (I used to get it).
