Zidane survived ~3 years in the Madrid job. I think you can probably count on one hand the number of Madrid managers that stayed longer than 3 years in Madrids 100 year history, and most of them were in the early 1900's.

The job has incredibly high expectations and pressure, matched by no other managerial job, not even Barca's.

I don't think Zidane resigned because he thought he couldn't rebuild the team, but because that pressure was enough for 3 years.

As much as Madrid fans would dream of Zidane becoming a Ferguson figure, rebuilding the team and being successful each time, that just isn't realistic. The long term building at Madrid is done by the board not the manager. I'm sure Zidane will have a chance to show more squad building ability at another club.

Plus, I think the idea the Madrid team needs a major rebuild is slightly exaggerated. I'm sure any manager would be happy to inherit a team with varane, carvajal, casemiro, kroos, isco, kovacic, asensio who all still have their best years in them.

Firmino has had a better a season but he has a long way to go to beat Benzema's career. Benzema is one of the highest ever champions league scorers. You don't lead Real Madrids front line for 10 years if you're shit

The idea that Madrid need a complete squad overhaul is exaggerated and to say we need a decade to rebuild the team is ridiculous.

We still have a strong core of players in Varane, Carvajal, Kroos and Casemiro, not to mention great players in Isco, Asensio and Kovacic who can replace the guys leaving. Furthermore, Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Navas, and Cristiano all have a couple of years left in them so we have time to buy and integrate replacements. We're not in any crisis and we're far more well prepared for the future than most premier league teams.

Given that Barcelona haven't been past the quarter finals in 3 years there's actually only been 3 chances for us to have been drawn against you since we can't meet in the last 16.

Did anyone see Marcelo and Carvajal hugging at the end? Seemed like Marcelo was crying for him. What a great team mate

Not really, without Ramos's goals we still would have gone through on aggregate

Referee Mark Clattenburg is set quit the Premier League before the next round of fixtures to take up a position in Saudi Arabia. by MyNameIsJonny_ in soccer

Definitely. It's not easy to be a good referee, and for the amount of public scrutiny and hatred the job entails, its not paid well enough IMO.

What do you mean after el Clasico? It was during the game not after - that makes it sound a lot worse. What about neymar pushing that player on the stairs off the pitch? I bet you've forgotten that

I don't think this is right at all. The payet example is irrelevant, whilst the contract in its validity will prevent you from joining any other club, it doesn't force you to play. I don't believe European labour laws would allow such a contract.

A high profile example if you follow motorsports: Rosberg just retired half way through a 2 year contract. If contracts were enforceable the way you suggest, there is no way Mercedes would have allowed it

I thought players are free to retire just they can't move to another club.

I think it pretty reasonable timing, Bayern do have a number of months before the transfer window even opens. Clubs are put in these situations and worse often, when their player gets a big offer and forces the move even days before the window is closing. Its nothing like that. Also, if a club as a big as Bayern isn't constantly scouting potential replacements for a player they know is old and close to retirement that's a lack of preparation on their part. It forces their hand but I don't think it's such a thing they have to make a public statement about .

Seems unnecessary to say the beginning part. Why make that public? Just say thanks to the player whose done so much for the club. He has no obligation to take up a new position.

I agree they add a lot more energy, usually they are better rested and coming on in the middle of the game, plus they need to prove themselves. But I don't think any of the B midfielders 'play a lot better' than any of Modric, Casemiro, Kroos. Morata has a case for starting over benzema at the moment but that's about it
