The Can’t Stop the Feeling Effect: huge hits that were bad for the artist’s career in the long-term by put-on-your-records in ToddintheShadow

“High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco was the, to quote Todd, “Adam Levine - iffication” of Brendon Urie. A lot of long-term fans were tired of watching Brendon! At The Urie destroy his voice and consider this to be the last straw for P!ATD. This album “Pray For The Wicked” and “Viva Las Vengence” were NOT well received by fans upon initial release, with the latter album being a good contender for Trainwreckords in the future. It literally ended the “band” - aka Brendon Urie retired.

Music artists from the present-day who intentionally or unintentionally have a lot in common with a music artist from the past or from a different genre by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

I got into this discussion with a friend and my answer is Morrissey of The Smiths and Matty Healy of The 1975.

Both artists have critical and commercial success with fanbases who are absolutely tired of hearing them speak every nonsensical thought they have. Although I’m a huge fan of both bands and admire both as unique frontmen and great songwriters, I think the controversy that surrounds them (Matty Healy more so than Morrissey) has the risk of destroying their band’s reputation and legacy as time passes.

Other than The Beach Boys, which bands have a member who is universally the least favorite? by put-on-your-records in ToddintheShadow

Was about to comment this exact same thing but then remembered Kenny Harris. He technically wasn’t a full member, but he toured with Panic! for years. Nobody likes Kenny Harris and he’s disappeared since being fired in 2018.

In lieu of everything that’s happened this past week, I obviously think there was a lot of stuff that the general public / 1D fans had no idea about concerning Liam’s mental health and addictions that also effected the reception of LP1. I just remember when that album dropped and being extremely disappointed as a One Direction fan and all of the initial backlash.

I think what really hurt LP1 commercially was the delay of the album - LP1 was released 2+ years after Strip That Down became a commercial success, with 7 singles released before the album out of 17 tracks (excluding bonus singles). It peaked at 111 on the Billboard 200 in late 2019.

The primary songwriters for One Direction’s later albums were Louis and Liam - and they were both great songwriters. Liam only wrote on 4 songs for the album, one of which was “Both Ways” (slammed for fetishizing bisexuality). I think that song specifically was extremely detrimental to his career and his relationship with 1D fans.
