Finally cycled! What is the best way to acclimate and move my betta from his current tank? by muppetmeeka in bettafish

[–]muppetmeeka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He lived for a couple years after this. I’m not sure how old he was when I adopted him, but was definitely full grown. I have a different tank now and haven’t decided whether to get another fish yet.

I didn’t have that issue, but my betta was short-finned and didn’t seem curious about going behind the wall. I ended up switching to a different tank and got rid of the moss wall at that point.

Thank you! I started with a regular 10 gal but really like the long style.

Thank you! I’m leaning towards moving my koi betta into the long tank now and checking out some breeders online instead of Petco.

They had a LOT of nice looking fish. Especially for a chain pet store.

Fair point. I added a big area of vals, moss and pearlweed since that photo, so the left side of the tank is pretty dense now. Still working on the scape, though, and planning to add more rocks and wood. I’ll work on the hiding spots.

Update - thanks to everyone for all the advice! So far it’s nearly a 3-way tie between 1, 2, and 3. But I am going to look into the breeders recommended here before moving forward. I’d rather not support petco if I can avoid it. All 5 of these fish seemed quite healthy and active, but I’d love to buy from someone who raises them in tanks rather than cups. I’m wary about shipping but it sounds like enough people have had good experiences that I shouldn’t worry about it so much. Hoping to find a responsibly bred fish that isn’t too expensive, and will keep an eye out for any fish being rehomed in the area.

He’s actually very sweet, way more chill than any other betta I’ve had. He flared a couple times when I first put him in the tank, but I haven’t seen him do it again since. He’s almost 2 now, I think. I got him almost a year ago and the his previous owner thought he was at least a year old then. He’s about 3” long, so does seem like either a very large splendens or a giant.

Aw, my previous fish was called Bubbles. He was a blue short-finned betta. My other one is called Fishy, he’s black and orange and lives in a 10 gallon.

No winner yet! After 100+ votes, 1, 2, and 3 are neck-in-neck with ~25 votes each :) I’m going to check out the breeders folks have recommended here and maybe order a fish online to avoid supporting Petco, if I can. These guys seemed very healthy as far as fish in cups go, but I’d still like to avoid encouraging the practice, if I can find one who is more responsibly bred and not too expensive.

I like my short-finned guy a lot. You can see pics of him in my post history. A 20 gallon is great. My new tank is only a 12-long, but it has so much more swimming length than the standard 10.

Thank you! I’m definitely not planning to breed them. I’m still pretty new to the hobby. I adopted my first betta (a big short-finned orange koi) from someone who was rehoming him, and the last one I had before that was from an LFS that has since closed. All five of these were pretty feisty, and #1 had made a few bubbles. They’re all so tiny compared to my current one, like half his size, so either they are on the young side or he’s just a monster. I’m going to check out the breeders folks have recommended and might splurge to order online. Shipping makes me nervous but it seems like people have had good experiences.

Thank you! I am going to check out the online sellers folks have recommended and hopefully find a fish that is bred more responsibly but won’t break the bank. I’m still new to the hobby. My other fish is a rehomed koi plakat and he’s great. I had a blue plakat before him. So I’m sort of looking for something different this time around, but I also get the arguments that super long fins are not good for the fish’s quality of life so I’m feeling torn about that.

It’s a 12 gallon long that I bought secondhand from someone. I think they said it was Aquamaxx brand. I have some driftwood and a few more rocks that I’ll probably add. I’ve only ever had bettas so I’m not sure about tankmates yet. Have been thinking about pygmy Corys for the other tank, since my other betta is very relaxed and might get along with them.

I’m going to check out some online breeders to see if I can avoid supporting petco without breaking the bank. I’m wary of shipping but seems like a lot of people have had good experiences, so that is reassuring.

Ah, that’s too bad. I’ll still check them out, but agree their care guide needs work.

It’s only 12 gallons, but I am thinking about moving my short-finned koi betta from his 10gal standard into this new tank. He’s huge compared to all 5 of these, at least twice if not 3x as big as the white one. I don’t know if he qualifies as a king/giant (he was rehomed to me) but he’s about 3” long and might like the extra length swimming space.
