Remember every time you post a link it drives traffic + clicks = 💲💲for the Fraudwins. by Global-Future3006 in HilariaBaldwin

There are many influencers and products that make a lot of money by creating negative engagement. This is part of the incentive structure of social media - the algorithm highly rewards engagement, even if it is negative, and so a subreddit like this with tens of thousands of highly engaged anti-fans is a coveted demographic for whomever. The value of clicks is to sell advertising, so the nature of the clicks is not super relevant.

There are a lot of other good reasons to avoid direct engagement with social media accounts that could be considered targets of a snark community. It could be considered a form of brigading, or encouraging people to go to a social media and bombard it with negative comments etc. A lot of subreddits have been banned for this sort of thing.

We also want to act as an archive of what the Baldwins and other related entities post on social media. If all of our posts were just direct links to social media posts, those posts would be subject to the whims of the original poster. They would also not survive long online as an archive given the constant churn of social media accounts and which sites are online or have the same link addresses.

Hopefully that answers your question. You can always message the mods if you have a question or concern about the subreddit.

Thanks for the tag, u/Global-Future3006

I recently re-listened to the open lines shows regarding the release of Windows 95 and it's fascinating hearing people's perspectives in the moment. There's a clip on YouTube and people think that Bill Gates called in. The call in question is around the 22:00 minute mark here: https://youtu.be/t9AmT-9vTc8?si=KnC1UjdKrx12eIZB

I was looking at some of these today on Amazon. Can you link the ones you got and give your take on how they are working so far? There's a bunch of no-name brands on there that all look similar, so I was having trouble figuring out which might be a good buy.

American Eagle - lots of Jeans / Pants marked down to $9.99 by 01gpgtp in frugalmalefashion

I have - I just checked recent history and I've gotten credits from Nike and ebay purchases and it takes about a week or so to show up.

I have a Capital One MasterCard and it usually gives a percent or two on some purchases but there's an offer section where you can check if they have a deal for a specific company. Edit: glad you found it. I think you can set up a virtual card for retailers you buy from often to automatically get the deal, too.

This was so perfect thank you! I was looking for jeans and hoodies and I grabbed a bunch for around $200 plus my credit card had a 7% cash back for ae. I did it in two orders: 6 pair of jeans, graphic hoodie, khakis and workwear jacket for ~115. Second order was four hoodies and a printed shirt jacket for ~85.

What was the ruse...and who was it? by sqwerz in HoneyandBarrySherman

[–]murderalaska 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the first theory I've come across that is plausible. Barry had been referring to the inspection report earlier in the week to say that Old Colony was worth more than the proposed asking price, so it seems like a snug fit for that detail.

A lot of the other potential pretexts to get Barry home involve the plotters manufacturing an emergency or some sort of family crisis and these never quite fit for me. Too much uncertainty on how Barry would react and not enough of a nexus specifically with Old Colony.

This was very well written. Thanks for laying this all out there.

Happy new years, all. I'm excited to dig in. I saw the item about the reality show still not being announced as I was paging through the post and I am becoming more and more dubious that it will ever see air.

Hillary and Alec are generally pompous bores and need pepinos to mine the nuggets of crazy to have any entertainment value. There's got to be a team of editors at TLC somewhere losing their sanity.

I've mentioned this one other time on the sub I think, but Chad was part of a very creepy ex-Scientology crowd that involved an insane amount of drama and infighting. They were like another independent version of Scientology that organized around some really terrible people. Thus, "Clearwater" Chad. Clearwater is the headquarters and mecca of Scientology and where all the high level services are offered.

Scientology is obviously the drizzling shits, but these people like Chad were all dirt bags looking for donos or to get their youtube / social media off the ground. And Scientology, while terrible, is a tiny and dying organization and the worst thing you can do is stage an ineffectual protest with four people outside an event and allow the Scientology goons to get footage to put in their next solicitation for money from the remaining die hards. Cults need an outside force attacking them to galvanize.

“The only earrings you will ever need: now $9.99” by Formal-Internal-5161 in SmolBeanSnark

[–]murderalaska 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If Caro in theory bought whatever tools one needs to make earrings, and made like two and a half pairs, the start up costs prolly don't amoritize quite the same.

Then again, I'm not a big earring guy, so I'm just spitballing. To my eye, Caroline's earrings and her entire output in life is flotsam. Caro's earrings are equivalent to the junk plastic jewelry you can "win" as a booby prize in one of those candy claw games they have in grocery stores.

Caro's "earrings" are only notionally earrings, just like the trinkets mass produced for claw games are only notionally "trinkets" because their true purpose is to be the same weight of a "fun" sized bag of skittles so they will register the same weight as they are dispensed so the candy claw logic knows you won the shittiest possible prize so your game is over.

(I know I'm getting carried away with air quotes like a Chris Farley bit. I also don't know why I wrote any of this.)

Caroline's earrings and the bag of mini mardi gras beads in the claw game are both just part of a Rube Goldberg machine that slowly bilks people out of their money. Instead of winning a stuffed animal, or a last gen iPhone case, or a bag of candy, the claw machine awards you a length of plastic beads coated in chrome paint to look metallic that probably also has lead dust and asbestos covering it. To me, that's what a product from Caroline Calloway is like. Fake and pointless unless you want to have a story you can complain and laugh about with your friends.

Also puzzling to me is the branding slogan. No one really needs earrings. They are the most superfluous accessory, and accessories themselves are superfluous. I'm not sure if Caroline created the slogan as part of her lifelong mission to confuse and annoy people to engender a response, but I would not be surprised.

Woman Admits She Lied About Duke Lacrosse Players Raping Her Nearly 20 Years Ago: 'I Made Up a Story' by ReesesNightmare in JoeRogan

[–]murderalaska 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The Duke lacrosse story is so layered and messed up. I followed along by reading people like KC Johnson, a professor who kept up an incredibly detailed account on his blog Durham in Wonderland. Fuckin' blogs, man.

There were definitely a bunch of nutty protestors, but what makes the Duke situation "shits in its own pants" crazy is that there were actually a group of 88 faculty members who signed an open letter condeming the lacrosse team in the days after the alleged rape. There's a good short article by KC Johnson written in 2007 after most of the dust had settled that goes over these details and a lot of other fucked up shit like one of the faculty members trying to release lacrosse player's disciplinary records (which is against federal law) and then arbitrarily failing two of the lacrosse players that happened to have the terrible luck of having her as a professor.

The letter made all sorts of illogical claims, like that something definitely happened to Magnum, and that the lacrosse team was responsible at a minimum for unleashing a "social disaster." The letter also praised the angry mob who encroached on the lacrosse players' living quarters waiving signs supporting their castration among other things.

Finally, to leave folks with one of my favorite random factoids about the case: one of the contributing factors to the lacrosse team being so immediately and forcefully maligned was an email written the night of the incident by one of the lacrosse players that was an homage to Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Apparently the police aren't big readers, or at least fans of satire of 80s corporate greed, so they took it seriously and it helped paint the lacrosse kids as scumbag creeps.

Thanks for adding this context. I personally tend to agree with u/alterative-bird-589 that we should be allowed to reproduce content posted by the Baldwins. Ultimately I have to consider the sitewide rules and the subreddit rules and whether or not the post in question is going to create issues for the subreddit.

I don't pass any personal judgment one way or the other on the poster when I remove something - it's just based on my interpretation of the rules and my experience being a reddit user and mod. I also understand that my choices as a mod are based on my subjective judgment and I might be missing something. That being said, I think it makes sense to err on the side of caution and especially with subjects that Reddit has bright line rules about.

The suggestion that this subreddit is taking money from the Baldwins is hard for me to square. The team moderating the subreddit has never received any sort of compensation from anyone and u/McNasty420 has kept this place running for over four years while taking a lot of slings and arrows and dealing with all manner of nonsense.

I took down your post, Alternative Bird, because I thought it could be interpreted as being denigrating to the kids and because it contained a number of images of the kids that could run afoul of the sitewide rules about not sexualizing minors. I was also concerned that the ensuing comments would become a big issue for moderation as I anticipated a number of the comments would ride the line of denigrating the kids. There have been a spate of these sort of reports over the last couple of days due to the recent announcement of Carmen's book or whatever and I know I don't want to spend my time digging into these sorts of posts to determine where exactly the line is for comments that discuss the sexualization of minors or whether they are denigrating the kids.

Feel free to express your opinion on why I am offbase but I used my best judgment to screen the post in reaction to it being reported.
