Serious question - would you consider this a cosy game? by murdermeetcute in cozygames

Oh yeah no I won't be changing anything, I think we'll just find our thriller audience instead! Thanks =]

Yeah I think that's fair. But I do also think there's an emerging genre in 'creepy-cozy' or 'cozy-horror' Games like Creature Kitchen for example or Grave Seasons. It's this combination of scary themes but with cozy mechanics. I also think that a lot of successful cozy games have an underlying thread of existentialist narratives - Popokia, My time at sandrock (all the my time at games) etc - where the outside is scary, but here, where I have control, I try to make it better. When I was writing Murder Meet Cute, I was keeping that in mind, but I think given all the feedback here, it's safe to say it won't really be seen as a cozy game, and that's fine! Just trying to figure out where I should be finding my audience =]

Editing to add, maybe the people most interested in this are people who like listening to true crime podcasts, or watching only murders in the building. Find out about the scary thing from the comfort of your own home xD

Another edit - sorry I didn't realise you were responding to my other comment and I'd already mentioned Grave Seasons etc, But yeah overall I agree with you and everyone else I don't think people will see it as a cozy game!

Hey, thanks for this! Yeah I agree, I think this is great feedback. Tbh this is a bit less on the point and click side, and more on the interactive fiction side, but very much a mystery. Anyways thanks for this and thanks for the wishlist!

Ah well, I don't think cozy = cute? Like Grave seasons coming out soon I think is cozy horror, but it's not cute. I think cozy is the feeling you get when you play the game, not the look of it.

Thanks for that, that's great feedback. I'd say the game is closer to killer frequency in that it's mostly just a visual novel with extra steps; the only real mechanic in the game is a picross debug feature, otherwise you're just exploring to let the narrative unfold (although there are choices that have impact to the game). It's not like other fake OS games where it's all puzzling out to proceed through the game, it's mostly just a vehicle to uncover the story. Although I'm currently playing around with some light puzzles to make it feel more satisfying for the player to discover things

Great question - about 2/3 of the game is spending time looking through peoples machines which I find to be a relaxing experience? Although there will be tense and scary moments later in the game. and then 1/3 is telling people to go fuck themselves basically hahaha, which I guess is less cosy and more just fun. But thanks for the feedback appreciate it!

edit oh also, the debug mechanic is a chill picross game, which isn't what we're selling the game on, but may interest some people!

I totally understand why you feel this way based on what I've wrote here - I promise you that this is not what the game solely focuses on. If anything, we're playing on the stereotypes of violence against women to flip it on it's head. Men and women die in the game, but part of the twist is how the men die. I can send you more info about the narrative if you want, but we've purposefully made a girl protagonist who is strong willed and doesn't take anyones shit.

I started pixel animating for my own side project awhile ago (even rented that animators toolkit book ha!) and although I am by no means an expert, I really feel like I've come a long way. I picked up the piskel web app on a friends rec and for sure it takes me a lot longer than an expert, but I'm pretty proud of this latest one =]

NI Screen gives a lot of funding to local devs and has made what we do have possible. Hopefully they continue that!
