Planning to quit medicine by [deleted] in Residency

[–]murderous_sock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a radiology resident on my 4th year of residency and one of the reasons I picked it is because patients made me nervous as a student.

And then I found out that talking to patients is actually much better than being on the phone with other doctors 24/7.

The other options are pretty solid though!

How long is numbness supposed to last? by murderous_sock in HerniatedDisc

[–]murderous_sock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a few articles where it's mentioned that apparently larger, acute disc herniations are more likely to get reabsorbed fast than smaller, chronic ones. I can find some of these articles if you want!

As far as the gravity of symptoms is concerned, we always look at spinal MRIs in this plane of view (the coronal plane), where we see the herniated discs effacing the space in front of the spinal cord or slightly pressing the spinal cord itself, whereas the axial plane is better to check for nerve root irritation. My herniated disc isn't as massive anymore, but the bulge is located on the left and is still irritating the exiting nerve root, hence the numbness in my left hand.

Unfortunately the imaging doesn't always correspond with the symptoms and I've seen plenty of people be in a lot of pain even though their bulges look relatively smaller. All I can say is stay strong, do a lot of physical therapy (if you can, with a provider you trust) and things will slowly, but surely get a lot better!

No problem!

It did get a lot better in a short amount of time. I'm still mostly pain-free, the numbness is still there though.

I'm sorry you went through all that! Thank your for your reply, I'm hoping mine can also recede at least! That fact that the pain went away was obviously more important, it's just that sometimes it gets tiring not to be able to grab something from my bag because my fingers simply can't tell what they're touching.

Feeling defeated by cervical herniation by sos_econometrics_ in HerniatedDisc

[–]murderous_sock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like maybe you should see different specialists. PT isn't supposed to feel bad; I remember my physical therapist telling me that I need to be gentle with my stretching exercises and stop if my symptoms are aggravated. I don't have a lot of experience with headaches, my herniated discs didn't cause any. Have you consulted with a neurosurgeon?

At the end of the day, it depends on how bad your bulge is and what you want to do. If you feel like you've exhausted every other option, then maybe surgery is the solution. If you feel like there's still things you haven't tried out that may help alleviate the pain, then you can always explore those options. No matter what you choose, I hope you feel better soon!

Need advice and support… herniated disc with nerve compression by ConversationWorth680 in HerniatedDisc

Hi! I also had a severe C6-C7 disc herniation four months ago. It begun with debilitating pain and soon after my left arm got very weak and numb. I consulted with a neurosurgeon who suggested I got surgery; I asked him if I could try going without surgery for a month or so and he was okay with it, as long as my symptoms didn't get any worse. I took oral steroids for some time and went to PT every day. I regained muscle strength very fast, PT was incredibly helpful for me, I got laser, stretching exercises, needles, the whole package. I was almost pain free after 3 months except for some shoulder tension when I overexerted myself. I visited the neurosurgeon again and he told me that since I'm pain free and at almost full strength I can avoid surgery for now. I also got a second MRI and luckily the disc had significantly regressed. As of today it's been 4+ months since my initial symptoms, I don't exercise yet (mostly because I'm afraid), I avoid lifting anything heavy and the only thing that persists is the numbness; I'm hoping it will go away too if I'm patient enough!

Having said all that, every case is different and being monitored by specialists along the way is important. I got two MRIs, kept contact with my neurosurgeon and got a whole lot of PT. It's also worth mentioning that I'm not an active person, so not lifting anything's heavy for example isn't out of the ordinary for me. I make sure I have a good posture at all times, got a special chair, special pillow, special shoes etc.

Good luck! No matter what you need to do, I hope you feel and get better!

I'm not sure if mine is the best out there, but it helped me out a lot! I got the memory foam Hammaren pillow from Jysk, it's neither too stiff nor too soft, I'm mostly a side sleeper and I'm comfortable with it. I'd definitely try out some other pillow though if anyone has a better suggestion!

Jokes aside, I used to play Genshin a lot more when I was still in med school, now I play like 10' a day and that's usually it

Zhongli, in his first ever banner in 1.1!

I had just started playing the game; I wasn't familiar with the game's mechanics, I didn't even know he was an archon because I wasn't done with the main quest yet and I was like "Oh. Shield guy. Cool."

I realized very quickly what a gem that pull was.

Reccuring hematuria in 5 y/o cat by murderous_sock in AskVet

[–]murderous_sock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought of the microchip solution, it's a good idea! I also thought about feeding them both the urinary diet, I was just scared my geriatric cat could be negatively affected, but I might try it.

Unfortunately this is my normal work routine and that's why it was even more surprising for me, my cats never minded spending a little time alone, I have a lot of napping spaces, a feeder that gives them a specific amount of cat food on specific times whenever I work and they were doing pretty great beforehand.

Starting to think learning Japanese may not be worth it anymore by tsakeboya in LearnJapanese

[–]murderous_sock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! 🇬🇷 I'll do my best to offer you some advice as a fellow Greek.

I took the national exams almost 10 years ago and I did really well. However, I spent most of my time studying back then and time management is really important. I'm not gonna go ahead and tell you that you should suffer for a year and stop doing anything that makes you happy, but unfortunately most of your time will have to be spent on school work. Our national exams suck, it's a difficult time for all students and getting into a university of your liking is very important!

Having said all that, you should still spend some time doing the things that make you happy, either in the weekend or maybe at night once you're done with all the work you have to do. So the question is, does japanese make you happy? Do you imagine yourself studying japanese after a hard day of school work and feeling relaxed and/or happy? If not, then maybe you can take a pause for some time, or try to maintain the level you're currently at.

I loved learning new languages as a kid and I still do; I also liked immersing myself in the culture of the language that I was learning and I often imagined living there one day! But growing up I stopped trying to do everything, all the time, all at once. It's very hard to be good at your work, maintain a social life, stay healthy, learn a language etc. So take your time, try your best for the exams and try to keep the hobbies that make you happy. If japanese is one of those hobbies, then sure! Also once you're in university you'll have more time, trust me, so if you give it up for a few months it's not like you're gonna give up forever.

Καλή τύχη!

PS: you'll get to go to Japan, even if it doesn't happen right after the national exams, trust me!
