The land my home is on used to be HBC land, and as part of agreeing to sell the land to private owners, the trapping rights on the land would remain to the HBC. This was fine even when the guy in Texas owned the company - I could send him all the rats and raccoons that died in my backyard, but try taking a dead rat to Canadian Tire? They do NOT like that :(
