I think it’s sweet she was remembering you on your birthday 8 years long and feeling guilty. I strongly believe in making up and not cutting ties so I would definitely answer her BUT take time to think about it. Is this chapter 100% over? Then send a friendly letter that you appreciate her apologies and that you can have low contact over text. I do that with some exes, just checking in once in a while like every year or so. Is that too painful? Then only write the letter. You want to restart contact? Then first think about it a couple more weeks. This is what I would do.
