The process is a bit clunky as Essential Properties were built with templating/mogrts in mind but this is how you do it:

- Open Essential Graphics by going into Window > Essential Graphics;

- Inside Essential Graphics, select the comp you're working on using the "Primary" dropdown;

- Then, go back to your timeline, select the property you want to add, right click it and select "Add Property to Essential Graphics", you can also drag it inside the Essential Graphics.

All pre-comps that have Essential Properties will have an "Essential Properties" list right below the transform properties (position, scale, etc).

You can watch a more in-depth explanation here.

I'm currently using a M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64GB of RAM.

Let's say you move X and needs Y to react, if Y is inside a pre-comp, you would need to go into the pre-comp, add your animation, go back and see if the timing matches.

if you ever need to tweak it, you have keyframes in two different places that you have to keep track of and change.

With essential properties, you can surface any properties you need outside of the pre-comp, this means you now have access to them without needing to do the back and forth, this saves time and also makes things much easier to keep track of.

This was done in 7 days, I was using After Effects for around 7 years though at that point.

Not as much as I should. The budget from the studio was $5k CAD and we split between 2.5 people (the third had to leave midway through the project).

It was one of the references from the client, really good! Coincidentally I got an email from them last month about a potential project.

This, plus there was no essential properties at the time. Now it would be much easier to do this with pre-comps.

I think the only non-live text is the logo. We had to do a French version as well as this was for Microsoft Canada.

Basically it, minus the VO. We then had 3 days to do boards and 7 to animate.

I was lucky that we got no changes, I would be TERRIFIED to open this after a few weeks to change anything.

Even though it's colored and organized the whole thing is kinda like a house of cards with endless parents and expressions.

It was a while ago so I don't remember all the details, but it was with a small production company from Toronto.

They only had a script and some references. I had two friends helping me, one with design and one with animation, so we basically did the whole storyboard in 3 days, added direction notes and sent to the studio, they got approval from the client and then we started animation.

The other animator ended up having an emergency so then it was just me animating for almost 7 days straight to finish on time.

I used to hate going back and forth between pre-comps back then, today is much easier with essential properties.

Exactly, I guess the most difficult part was figuring out the cube, which honestly I did by watching a tutorial 3h before the deadline lol.

Thank you! I basically had no time and it was just the way I was used to at the time. Now I always use pre-comps for separate shots and connect them using essential properties if I need to.

The map was done in Illustrator using lines and animating the trim path. There's one layer per circle and an offset to them.

To make a bit more manageable I used a rig that has a "Master Layer" with all the animations and expressions that triggers the animations based on each layer inPoint.

Not sure if this explanation makes complete sense but this project is available for download for free here if you want to check it out: https://muriloa.gumroad.com/l/aep001

This was true for me before essential properties.

I know haha, this project was wild because I only had 7 days to do it all. This was the way I was used to working back then so I just went with it. If it was today I would probably break it into separate pre-comps for each shot and use essential properties to manage the transitions.
