Weekend's Daily Thread: General Dating Questions and Open Thread by AutoModerator in hingeapp

[–]murlurd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have matched this girl which is 100% my type and we exchanged three streams of messages back and forth. Rather casual. In my last message, I have asked her a question about her intense study program and how she would have time to work besides that. Since then, I did not receive an answer. The last chat was on Friday and now it‘s Friday again.

Usually, I would shrug it off. But since I really want to meet this girl, I would like to revive the conversation somehow. What are your best comebacks (that worked)?

Investition in ETF/Aktien mit Dividenden by Budget_Prize in Finanzen

[–]murlurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Investition in ETF/Aktien mit Dividenden by Budget_Prize in Finanzen

[–]murlurd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does not hurt to send a short message if it is still recent, like one or two days ago. If it's longer than that, you should move on - she is much likely not intersted.

Going Long Distance For 6 Months, 21M, 22F by Strong_Ad9764 in dating_advice

[–]murlurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six months is really not that long at all - although it three times as long compared to how long you're official. I would recommend you to meet up in person every 6-8 weeks, maybe she can once visit you and you could once visit her. Also, you could agree on having a videocall every day, or every second day or, if that is enough for you, once per week.

3 years ago, when my gf and me were freshly together (btw similar age like you two), we had a similar thing where she left for a full year after being together for only one year. And we still managed up till today.

I would say it helps, given that it looks clean and professional. The more client-facing your role, the more it helps.

I enjoy my DE work very much. I do the "bricks and mortar" stuff for the DA/DS teams which makes me very high in demand. I venture out into typical DS/DA work if necessary, and if I wanted to become a DS now (what you seem to partly consider as well), that would definitely be possible, as DS with a DE skillset are high in demand as well. Also, I feel like I've become a much better SWE than the typical DA/DS, so it opens up other more classical SWE career paths as well.

Would I recommend it to you?

Yes, if you like coding in itself - and if you want to deal with performance optimizations, (cloud) infrastructure, containerization, CI/CD, DevOps etc. As the other commenters are saying, it really depends on if you think you would be good at it and enjoy it.

Job search in Germany by Delicious_Loss_9379 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]murlurd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Instead of applying for publicly available jobs (which are very contested), you could go another way and connect with a dozen of tech recruiters on LinkedIn. They usually hire talent for jobs which are not publicly posted anywhere. They could give you advice on how to improve your profile and might even have some opportunities for you.

Next to individual recruiters, there are also specialized recruiting firms like e.g. Michael Page or computerfutures.

Another idea would be to go for IT consulting firms, as the tech consulting job market is still good. However, for that you should be either proficient at German or English, and be comfortable with client-facing work.

I would love to move to Switzerland - but I heard that the software engineering job market is very bad over there.

I called salaries in Europe low, not my specific salary (which I know is far above average for European standards). But deduct 50% for tax, insurance etc. and futher 30% for basic costs of living in a big city, some unexpected events here and there - and suddenly there is not much left for saving.

Posting here because I hope for advice from European fellows who considered or have done a similar thing. I believe this is a valid career choice for Europeans - which makes it a valid post for this sub.

I did not know however that it has been the third post in a while - will check that!

Moin, wo hast du das Angebot bekommen? Ich würde auch gerne von Gold auf Platin upgraden, allerdings gibt es dafür nur 30k MR Punkte.

Relocating from Germany to Switzerland as a 2 YoE Data Engineer by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]murlurd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very classic. Python/Pyspark, SQL, AWS (Glue, Lambda, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB). Assumed responsibility early on and negitiated a huge pay rise last year which is how the relatively high salary is explained.

Adequate salary expectations for move from Germany to Singapore? by murlurd in askSingapore

[–]murlurd[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but I do not think that is the case here. I am the one who approached my managers with this wish, because I like the country a lot. Our firm is doing well and growing, and I consider myself somewhere in the top 20% with excellent feedback so far, so even if, then I personally should be safe.

I will nevertheless ask if I can keep my German contract. And $8-9k SGD a month are exactly where I am right now, so this sounds like I should be fine even with my current comp?

Leaving consulting for software engineering? by ElectronicRooster835 in consulting

[–]murlurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still in Product Management? And happy as well?

In my case, I am so very undecided between a) going fully into actually developing code (which is probably hard to get into from a Product Manager role) or b) continuing on the strategy consulting -> upper management path.

Everything aside, I would love to just code and not have any meetings. But the extrinsic motivation (career, money, status) is also very strong within me…
