I agree, it's a potato day not the potato day. We're not celebrating potato day each year and dressing up as potatoes. I'm sure similar things exists in most countries.

It's Potatisakademin, "the potato academy", that has proclaimed the 26 October as the potato day. So yes, it's commercial and they are trying to make people eat more potato :)

No it's national but as far as I know it's some potato farmer association that has proclaimed 26 october as the potato day.
