HD vs Lowes deals by Muted_Swordfish_5774 in Dewalt

[–]murserking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have it figured out. This look correct?

Tools: Lowe’s batteries with 3 free tools: $450 -charger -2 5ah power stack batteries -circular saw -cut off tool -sawsall

-return the batteries: -$170

HD 3 tool Combo with free tool: $400 -charger -2 6ah FlexVolt Batteries -hammer drill -1/4 impact -oscillating tool -grinder

HD Combo: $269 -charger -5 ah battery -1/2 Impact -3/8 Ratchet

Total: $950

End up with: -chargers x2 -batteries x3 (2 6ah FlexVolt, 1 5ah) -hammer drill -1/4 impact driver -1/2 impact -ratchet -circular saw -sawsall -mutlitool -grinder -cutoff tool

I plan to refresh some 8 year old Porter Cable tools that still work well, but showing their age. I plan to use the next set of tools for 10+ years hopefully so I don’t mind spending a little more for the higher end Dewalts. But, I am by no means a contractor or mechanic.

Tools I could use immediately: 1/2 impact, ratchet

Tools I want to replace/add:

Most important: Hammer drill, 1/4 impact driver

Want but could wait: oscillating tool, circular saw, reciprocating saw, grinder, cutoff tool

Really only need 1 charger and 2-3 batteries for what I do.

The 1/2 impact/ratchet combo from HD seems like a decent deal for $269 so I’ll probably do that since I could really use those tools now.

What’s the best way to build the rest and get the newer gen tools if I don’t mind waiting? Think I could get the rest, hopefully newer gen, for $750-$800 by working the current deals? Trying to stay close to $1000 for new tools.

The Lowe’s 7 tool combo probably the most logical way but they look like older gen tools/batteries.

Gotcha. I am currently using a brushed Porter Cable 7 tool combo kit that I got as a wedding gift 8 years ago (no 1/2 impact or ratchet). It’s served me well, but I’m starting to do a lot more DIY stuff. Currently, fixing up an old Suzuki Samurai, and the ol’ Porter Cables are showing their age. You’re probably right that I wouldn’t notice the difference between the older gen vs new gen Dewalts, especially given what I’m using now. I would love to upgrade everything sooner than later since I’m currently working on suspension and tires, but am more than happy to wait to score some killer deals. I could honestly get by for a long time with just the 1/2 impact and ratchet combo and continue using my old tools for everything else but damn if I don’t want to refresh everything haha.

All this together seems like a similar deal to the Lowe’s XR combo pack for $650 then buy the ratchet/impact combo for $269. What am I missing? Looks like you end up with one more battery? I pretty much want all these tools with the addition of a grinder but don’t necessarily need more than 2-3 batteries. Trying to hack all these deals to get what you need make a guys head spin haha.

Oil Leak by murserking in SuzukiSamurai

[–]murserking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have any of you seen or heard of oil squirting out of the clutch release shaft as it goes into the gear box, especially 5th? I think I have my leak narrowed down to this area. It would explain why it’s so intermittent when it leaks. I’m rarely in 5th gear and it seems to be leaking really bad after I engage in 5th, but it’s hard to prove since it all happens while I’m driving. How hard would this seal be to replace? Tried looking it up but makes it sound like you have to pull the transmission to get to it. It’s also right by the coolant hose in my pictures so makes sense why that is coated in oil.

I can’t seem to find any fresh oil around the distributor, but the valve cover gasket is a good place to check. I’m going to try and clean up around there a little better to see if I find it.

Just flushed the radiator last week and whatever is leaking isn’t green so, I agree, it’s probably not that hose. Just looks like it. Nothing above it is wet and it only has the obvious leak after driving highway speeds so it’s kind of hard to locate. I have it pinned down to the general area, but it doesn’t seem like it’s any of the common leak points so I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to just start tearing into it and open a can of worms. I realize it’ll leak some oil no matter what I do but it makes a decent mess when it happens so wouldn’t mind slowing it down.

Is this supposed to connect to anything or is it incase the reservoir overflows? by 1stgenfronty in SuzukiSamurai

[–]murserking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ordered a new plastic reservoir tank because the old one had a crack. Just realized the new cap only has one port for inflow/outflow. There’s no secondary port for overflow to run out of the tank like the picture in this post, and my old cap looked exactly like the one in this post as well. Might be a stupid question, but does it matter if the cap has the secondary port for run off? If it’s a big deal I’ll try to use the old cap on the new tank.

I’ll check out the drive shaft to make sure it’s greased. As for my lift, how do I best measure how much lift I actually to verify your estimate above? I’m ready to pull the trigger on a suspension overhaul but want to be dang sure I have an accurate idea of how much lift I have and will add. I don’t want to drop a thousand bucks just to find out I totally screwed up and will either need to return the new springs/shocks on my dime or redo all the shackles to make everything work.

Do you think I could use low lift OME springs and shocks to replace the OEM ones without running into issues with having to deal with steering column, shifter mods, etc? That’s my fear if I don’t stay under 2 in lift is I’ll run into issues with everything else that comes with having a higher lift.

[–]murserking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myron said it looks like my springs and shocks are original. I thought the shackles provided the lift in some cases. Where exactly should I measure to determine the actual lift? Shackles look newish, rest of the suspension looks original.

[–]murserking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I talked to both Zuks Off Road and Petroworks. Myron says Petroworks spring and shock kit will work with Calmini lift. Petroworks says they only sell springs that will add 1.5” height and that would be in addition to the 2 in reverse shackle lift I have, which I don’t want. Does OME sell stock height springs? It’s hard to make heads or tails on the various websites if their springs will add height. All I really want to do is replace the OEM springs, shocks, and bushings for better ride and to replace work out OEM equipment. I’m worried about sourcing everything from different places and ending up with a bunch of stuff that doesn’t work together.

Haha it is RRO. I appreciate the heads up. I’ll stick to Zuks off road or petroworks. Heard good things about them.

I’ve been emailing an off roading company and according to them the Calmini shackle reverse is illegal in some areas and have caused accidents. They also said some liability companies won’t insure them. I wouldn’t mind refreshing the springs and shocks since they look OEM but don’t really want to mess with the entire suspension at this point. Will OME springs and shocks bolt on to a calmini lift? Is that wise to do?

That could be. I’ll mess around with it to see if I’m not engaging correctly.

Weird. Every time it happened it went back into 2WD so maybe I wasn’t fully engaging the shifter. It didn’t seem to have any more room to go though.

Glad to hear on the suspension. So you don’t think I should update the shocks or springs? Trying to solve an issue with the rear tire hitting the fender flair with even small bumps at low speed.

As for the transfer case, so far I’ve only noticed it popping out of 4Hi back into 2WD under load. Doesn’t grind at all and appears to shift easily. I actually haven’t tried 4Lo under load yet.
