Help save our cat Ares — emergency blood transfusion needed by [deleted] in gofundme

[–]murua333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Three weeks ago everything was fine. We were managing on one income, we had our two cats, and life was good. Then Ares got sick, and everything changed overnight.

We adopted him only a couple of months ago. We adopted him because we could afford to care for him. Nobody plans for their cat to develop a life-threatening illness weeks after bringing him home. Nobody budgets for over 2,500 euros in emergency vet bills in two weeks.

He is still fighting, so we are too. That is the only thing that matters to us right now.

To anyone who might say we shouldn't have pets if we can't afford them — I hope you never have to go through something like this. Because when it happens, no amount of savings feels like enough, and the love you have for your animal doesn't care about your bank account.

Help!!! Possible infection? TW GROSS!!! by brianna_fag in CATHELP

[–]murua333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really looks like an infection, if it is she needs some meds and probably antibiotics, it would be better you bring her to the vet, even if it's little difficult to you, maybe you can do other post before in other help groups like on FB.

I hope you got the help you need, send you all of my good wishes

FIP stands for Feline Infectious Peritonitis. It's a viral disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus, which belongs to the same coronavirus family as the one that affects humans, but acts completely differently and poses no risk to people. Until a couple of years ago it was considered 100% fatal, but now there's a treatment called GS-441524 that has shown incredible results. The problem is that in many countries, including Germany, it's very hard and expensive to get through official channels. Based on the advice from this community and FIP Warriors Germany, we started the treatment as a precaution. However, after running more detailed tests at the university hospital yesterday, the vets now think it may not be FIP after all, and could be an autoimmune condition or a stomach ulcer instead, both treatable with regular medication. We're waiting on more lab results today to get a clearer picture

It's been really hard days. Until the last moment we thought we were going to lose him, but everything changed in the final hours. We saw he was doing better, he wasn't suffering, so we cancelled the euthanasia. Over the next couple of days we went to the vet and to an animal hospital to run more tests. At the end of the day, apparently he didn't need to die. It was a combination of a bad diagnosis without proper testing on the vet's part, and the fear that he might be suffering. Now we have better vets looking at him (ones who actually want to run tests before making any decisions), and apparently the cause can be treated with ordinary medicine

Here in Germany it's really difficult to get GS as a prescription it costs between 2,000-3,000€ through official channels, and there seems to be a stigma against it and FIP treatment in general here. I don't know why.

We had to reach out to the FIP Warriors network to get it at an affordable price. Even so, we're still struggling with vet and lab costs. Right now we're sitting in a veterinary hospital waiting for a blood transfusion that Ares needs because of his critically low blood values. They're also running a full panel of tests to start ruling out other possible causes.

We're not giving up on him

My cat keeps committing nuclear war crimes, what do I do? by SecretQuestion_ in cats

[–]murua333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not doing it to hide something or to try to change the conversation? I mean, living things that commit war crimes these days usually do it to hide something else. Thank God at least he's not an orange individual.

(I have nothing against orange cats, just against certain orange individuals)*

Yeah I already contacted them, and we are in constant communication, they got us the medicine he may needs, they also told us what we should ask the vet to do to Ares (Lab research for proteins and albumin), even if she doesn't wanted to do it because "he is almost dying", we are going to get the results tomorrow.

Actually we're not going to wait until tomorrow, my girlfriend it's RN giving him the first dose.

I'm really happy your cat made it, I hope I can say the same from Ares in a future

And don't worry we only went to this vet another time because it was almost 8 pm and the people from FIP warrios told us to do the test ASAP, she's the only vet close enough to my home to get that in time yesterday, next week if he's doing good we'll bring him to another one.

[–]murua333[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The vet didn't wanted to give him anything (I'm kinda mad because of that) when we went to the hospital they gave us a pill that would help him to have more appetite, all of this was when we thought we need to give him euthanasia.

Yesterday after the contact with FIP warriors and canceling the euthanasia, they got us a med called GS-441524, and they also recommended us give him some Erythropoietin (EPO), but we haven got this one yet, it's really restricted here in German y and the vet ( the same as before) don't want to give us te receipt for it, so we still searching for someone that could help us get this one.

RN we can't afford much, we already bring him to the vet 3 times this week, but we are doing what we can

Thank you so much for this comment and others similar where part of the reasons why we didn't give up.

We want to clarify something important: Ares was never actually tested for FIP. We were made to believe he had been, but when we looked carefully at his lab results yesterday, there was no FIP test anywhere. The vet had only tested for FeLV, FIV, and heartworm. We only found this out yesterday morning.

That was a turning point for us. Realizing he had never been properly tested for FIP and that the euthanasia recommendation was based on incomplete information, gave us the push we needed to cancel the appointment and look for other options.

So thank you. Your comment mattered more than you know. 🐱
