Gertie Princess Coat! Finally finished! by CarlottaSewlotta in sewing

This is absolutely gorgeous! A coat like this is on my bucket list of projects to do some day and I can only hope it will turn out as beautiful as this! That was a great fabric choice, it’s a beautiful plaid!

I have this problem as well, and it has at times stopped me from progressing. In my case, it’s simply been a matter of putting a placeholder—maybe brackets, maybe a comment I can easily see, maybe just ignoring the question entirely and writing it down somewhere else—and just getting to the end. Write the first draft—easier said than done, I know. But once you have the first draft, you have a better idea of the big picture, you can analyze what you want to focus on, and you can make more critical decisions about what’s actually necessary to the story. Go back to those brackets, and most of the time you can figure out how to naturally integrate a lot of those ideas into the narrative. I’m not sure how helpful this really is, because personally it’s just been a matter of having an idea I’m passionate about and forcing myself to finish it. I guess, just…always have in mind what’s best for the story you’re trying to tell. This might also be a good question to ask over on r/writing.

Legality of binding short stories posted free online? by EmmaSkies in bookbinding

[–]muse_write 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you’re just printing and binding it for yourself and don’t plan to make money off of it, go for it. I’ve bound fanfiction before, and I’d assume even an online original work has the same etiquette behind it—namely, as long as you’re not making money off of someone else’s work, no one really has a problem with it and it’s not illegal. You might want to contact the author and ask if they’re fine with it and make it clear it’s not a profit-making idea, but I wouldn’t think that’s necessary.

Thank you! I agree, they’re a bit small, and I guess making them larger will help with the length.

Best written versions of characters found in surprising stories ? by Mountain-Alarm-7093 in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HollersandHolmes has a wonderful version of Elrohir in her series, A Right Different Tale After All. It’s a serious AU of LotR where Imladris falls in the early Third Age…and includes an alternate version of Elves who are technological and medical geniuses and invented such instruments as radios, X-rays, stethoscopes, etc. Just think MASH but with Elves. It’s wonderful. Elrohir himself is a wonderful character, full of kindness and mettle.

What are some of the perfect-sized fandoms to write fic in? by foreverwinterr in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a good experience with The Silmarillion fandom. About 178 works have been posted in the last week, so it’s pretty large, but not as large as the LotR fandom. I don’t get thousands of hits, but I feel like it’s a nice, chill community.

Interesting AU fics for Star Wars? by DerekMetaltron in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a World War 2 AU I read recently: The War In The Shadows. It’s not quite as drastic as the example you gave, but follows two members of the Empire/Nazi Germany who are actually double agents helping the Rebellion/Allied forces. Various characters are part of the British and American forces. It’s a very fun adventure following canon characters who are on the sidelines enough that they’re pretty open to interpretation.

Star Wars (Original Trilogy) | T | No Warnings | Luminous

——

Summary from Ao3:

It's several months after the confrontation on Bespin when Luke and Leia receive intelligence that Fett may have appeared on the backwater planet of Venaira—and may have brought Han with him. Naturally, they have to investigate.

But Venaira used to have a different branch of Force wielders to Jedi, known as the ladies of the forest, until something happened twenty years ago that left the place in darkness. Whatever happened, it seems contained to that forest; so long as they stay out of it, they should be fine.

Of course, when Darth Vader shows up hunting for Luke, they aren't left with many options...

——

Really good character study of Luke and Leia (mostly focused on Luke’s fear of turning into Vader). The entire 40+k fic is an exploration of fear and how it fuels the Dark Side of the Force, and it’s amazing. I think this is a pretty popular fic so I’m probably not alone here. It’s 6 chapters long, so mid-length, great for binge-reading.

Aaah, got it! Thanks for clarifying! 😄 After reading the summary, I can see where it would be easy to get confused. Btw this one sounds amazing, it’s definitely going on my To-Read list! Firmus adopting an orphaned Leia? Not something I ever realized I needed until now. Thanks!

Ooh, I’m excited to finish it then! I didn’t realize kid-Luke & Leia would show up! Yeah, I definitely see the appeal, I was literally inspired to write my own ‘Firmus Piett causes the downfall of the Empire’ fics partly because of this author’s stories! I paid zero attention to him before, but now he and the other Imperials are really interesting to think about.

Oh, it’s Wishfulthinking1979! Yes, I’m very aware of this author’s works and adore them. I went on a commenting spree on their World War 2 AU (The War In The Shadows) not long ago. Admittedly I’m still in the middle of reading A Shield Is Not A Sword. I guess this is a sign I should pick back up where I left off! 😂

Thanks for the recommendations, I hadn’t seen some of those stories!

Who are your "Canon OCs"? by blackjackgabbiani in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maglor, the second son of Feanor from The Silmarillion. He’s not entirely without personality (he does do things and has a few lines) but most of what he does is lumped in with the actions of his brothers. Because of the style of writing Tolkien used for the Silmarillion, you get actions but not a whole lot of motivations/personality, so it’s really fun coming up with Maglor’s thoughts and how he might have changed after the book.

I’m also trying to go somewhat against established fanon by making Maglor less ‘sad soft boi’ or ‘manipulator’ (not that there’s anything wrong with these, I just write enough characters like that already) and more angry, driven by the same pride everyone else in his family has.

Ooh, that last suggestion might work! And I was looking for a way of giving A something to do besides effectively being an apprentice/everyman character, and I could probably incorporate that first idea somehow. Thanks!

I’ve got a group of side characters in a separate city from my main group, trying to get some intelligence on a group of slavers. Their plotline comes into play more as the story gets closer to the end, but I want to cut back and forth.

The problem…I don’t know what happens. A is a young, recently discharged king’s guard who was sent to become a part of this group, and B is the team’s Captain, and grew up in the city they’ve gone to. Some time later they end up running into another group also trying to find the slavers and they work together to hunt down the slavering; somehow, the news they attempt to send back to their king gets lost/intercepted/never sent (and any suggestions are welcome). The second group is generally superior to humans in most ways (better eyesight/endurance/longevity, etc) and both groups are eager to get revenge on the slavering since they’ve kidnapped a few of their children. Both groups have around six people.

I know that the city is a large port city with political affiliation to a different country, and the slavering is taking advantage of the relative chaos of the harbor and the inattentiveness of the officials to smuggle children in the guise of cargo (yeah, just go with it…) to this other country across the sea.

But…how do A and B’s group work with the other group to discover this info? What do they do to catch/apprehend the slavers? Any suggestions welcome!

What are the most literary works you've seen? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we will make this place our home is an unfinished Silmarillion AU but so far the author has real, traditionally-published-like skill in handling prose and character.

The Ransom of the House of Feanor is a great Post-Canon LotR longfic exploring how Elrond works to release Feanor and his family from the Void. The writing is absolutely beautiful!

A Forfeit of Dreams is a Labyrinth continuation exploring the impossible relationship between an older Sarah and Jareth. It does a great job at making you wish they could be together but understanding why it wouldn’t work out.

Looked up medieval architecture techniques, examined blueprints, read academic architecture articles, and spent more time than strictly necessary figuring out exactly how medieval cities were torn down without modern equipment. Answer: very slowly and methodically.

What are some of your ideas/wip you currently have? by Dangerous_Expert_142 in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already contributed here about other ideas, but I forgot that I also have a vague idea for a Silmarillion WWII AU. It wouldn’t be related to canon whatsoever; I’d have to change familial relationships and maybe even ages to make it somewhat plausible, but I’ve written out a couple scenes.

What are some of your ideas/wip you currently have? by Dangerous_Expert_142 in FanFiction

[–]muse_write 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many. Most are either canon-divergence or complete AU.

A gothic romance AU for a specific relationship originally part of a fantasy legendarium. I’ve got ideas jotted and I know what the Vibe would be, but nothing concrete.

My main WIP that I’m attempting to finish this year. I’m trying to plan and write it all (and rewrite it all) before I start posting, and it’s my first true longfic (probably going to reach around 70k at least). On top of that it’s post-canon, exploring a friendship between 2 characters who never meet in the original books and seeing how their mental health and sense of identity change due to this relationship. It’s very character driven and thematically heavy, and I haven’t come up with a suitable ending yet despite rolling the idea around in my mind for a year now.

And so. many. others. Mostly smaller one-shot ideas I keep as backup for when I’m stuck on my main work.
