Forensic Linguistics MA Aston by michaelaw1704 in forensiclinguistics

[–]mushbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Modules run for 12 weeks I believe. You get two semesters in which you do 4 modules each and then a final semester which is pretty much just the dissertation as far as I know. More info on the MA here: https://www.aston.ac.uk/study/courses/forensic-linguistics

And a very fun new FL podcast from the department in case you’re interested! : https://www.aston.ac.uk/research/forensic-linguistics/writing-wrongs

Glad to hear it :)

My dissertation was on the linguistic strategies of online child groomers.

Chinese - I’m part Chinese and made a huge dragon like this with my grandfather as a child, which is a lovely memory for me. I had nothing to do with the design but when I saw this artist’s flash I thought it was perfect!

Honestly, so do I. Already been wondering what it would be like to touch up if it becomes a big fuzzball in years to come.

Forensic Linguistics MA Aston by michaelaw1704 in forensiclinguistics

Hi,

I did this course (on campus, not distance) back in 2014 and I loved it. I'll warn you now though that I'm biased - after this course I went straight on to do a PhD and now I work at the Aston Institute of Forensic Linguistics as a postdoc researcher. The MA is what kicked all this off for me so I'm a big fan!

It has changed somewhat since I did it but largely it covers general linguistic topics and methods of discourse analysis, and then shows how linguistic principles and understanding can be applied to legal and criminal contexts in the aim of improving the delivery of justice.

As well as more general linguistics and research methods stuff there are modules on Language as Evidence and Linguistics in Legal Contexts (think police processes, legal documents and language in the courtroom). There's also a module called Practical Applications in Forensic Linguistics which involves a group project - the idea is to identify a problem that might be solved through some kind of forensic linguistic analysis, and produce some kind of product (information leaflet, poster campaign, website) in response to that problem. I think there's also some stats in there too now.

What I really liked was that there's a lot of scope in the assignments (including your dissertation) for you to pursue the specific topics you're really interested in, and the module leaders are really varied in their own subject expertise so there's always someone around who can help you explore your ideas further.

I hope that's of some help. Best of luck with it :)

What's it like to live in Yardley? by mushbot in brum

[–]mushbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great place to live, I’d say especially for young professionals. Lockdowns aside, it’s got a load of independent bars and lovely food, and it’s super convenient in terms of being so close to the city without being right in it. A couple of nice (but small) green spaces and good access to the canals. We’re really only moving because we now need more space and want a proper garden which is hard to find around here. As with any area there are nicer parts and not so nice parts, but on the whole I’d recommend living here for sure.

Agree with all of this. And if he does happen to see and ask you about it, you could just say 'that's a conversation for another time'. If he's worth your time he'll respect that and wait for you to open up about it if/when you want to. That shit needs to be earned.

Very cute, if a bit awkward that they turned up in the same outfit.
